BTW, the obscure movie they reference in the liner notes -- Private Road , is really wonderful. Highly recommended.

Great compilation (I have the clear grey second press), though I agree with previous posters that the Daevid Allen track is both chronologically and musically anachronistic - it really does not fit with the rest of the tracks, but I think we'll excuse one slight misstep, given that the overall tracklisting is otherwise excellent.

Yes, its jarring to say the least "1976" as well. Solution ? One of the advantages of the compact disc remote, sadly.

I am so going to get this next week when I can afford it. It's just the sort of thing I love, because I'm very much into obscure tracks and lost 45s. I can get the CD version from Amazon for a nice price.

I got the clear vinyl a couple of days ago and the first thing I noticed were the distortion issues. I wish I’d read this thread first.

Now I don’t know whether to buy their French compilation or not.

Re: Roger Webb. I spent over twenty years trying to track down a piece of music that I heard in a UK ad. Turned out to be this...

I decided not to buy the French compilation on vinyl because of the issue I had with the English Weather vinyl. It's very disappointing that a reputable company like Ace can't press a decent sounding record.

I’ve written to Ace on Facebook about it. I can’t appeal to the seller because that was an individual who sold me a new and sealed copy on eBay -therefore not his fault.

I've seen this in a local shop here in Austria and it's really calling out to me to get it for the cover alone. Any news on the distortion issues?

My black L.P. isn't the greatest pressing, but it's tolerable, and a couple of the songs are needledrops so that didn't help. It's worth picking up regardless I'd say.

I was in touch with Ace about this, and while they’ve made a note of my findings, they did suggest that there would not be a second pressing. They did forward a copy on CD to me which only showed just how bad the vinyl pressing is, sonically. Avoid.

Get the CD. The music on the compilation is fantastic, the vinyl pressing is not.

25€, not really cheap. Clear vinyl. I think there's no download code. I'll try the CD I guess. Thanks!

Well ..cheaper 10.00 ( used if you ever see it). I got the cd after reading about the complaints. Fine with needledrops if that's the only source. But if it's pressed badly, mastered bad, no thanks. Pity it's looks better on the 12" medium.

Odd thing happening this morning. After weeks of living with the CD of this that Ace sent to me by way of compensation, the vinyl doesn’t sound that bad after all.

So -what’s changed ? Well for one, with the neighbours out at something called "work", I’m playing it louder than usual. Also, I have new speakers, Revel Performas.

So, maybe just turn it up.

This track is gorgeous, so if the whole LP is that good, it's a winner ...

    1974.

From an interview with the photographer, Peter Mitchell: "Mr and Mrs Hudson in Seacroft Green, Leeds. I took this photograph on the 14th of August 1974 at about 11am. I like the way the ladder is propping up the shop. They had just moved into a new shop on the same spot, with the church getting a facelift to match."
