You think? Not sure what makes Connery funnier in one than in the other...

Just finished watching "Goldfinger" on Blu-ray. It still holds up amazingly well. We had a Bondathon with "Goldfinger", "Goldeneye" (a film I like despite an occasionally annoying score that sounds like it's from the early 80's), "Casino Royale" and "Diamonds Are Forever".

I appreciate all of the Bonds although Goldfinger is the one for me.
    My Bondathon today consisted of:
    Quantum of Solace
    A View To A Kill
    You Only Live Twice
Every weekend at my house you'll find at least one James Bond movie playing!

The problem with OHMSS is not Lazenby, it's the whole Hilary Bray impersonation(voice over dub by George Barker). That section of the film is overlong and gets bogged down. Lazenby didn't even know they were going to do that. I think it would be better with Lazenby's voice, but the producers always know best. Lazenby was actually the tallest, youngest and most physical of all the bonds.

Incidentally, Lois Maxwell (moneypenny), claimed that OHMSS was her personal favorite, for being the most complete narrative and the one which could stand on it's own, irregardless of the rest of the franchise. Ironically, that is what it does,(stand alone), it has always been the bastard son and the cause of much embarrassment for the Producers.

I'm sure the infamous ABC TV alternative edit shown in the USA didn't help it either. Or the fact Connery came back.

Imo, it's better than Diamonds Are Forever or You Only Live Twice.

I think Goldfinger gets a bit too much credit.

I rank From Russia With Love as the best Bond movie, with Thunderball a close second.

Las Vegas as a backdrop was DAF strong point.
YOLT only redeeming quality imo was Barry's
underrated theme music sung by Nancy Sinatra.

Connery just has this look about him that says "if you mess with me, your dead"! But Lazenby matches the description of the character from the books the best. Also, I voted for OHMSS because it followed the book closer than any.
I was 12 years old when I saw From Russia With Love. I think puberty had something to do with me enjoying this film so much that I saw it at the theater 30 plus times!:D

I have been on a bit of a Bond kick lately picking up the Blu-Ray's. Anyone know why Never Say Never Again has a different style cover than the rest of the classics? I have been picking up the discs with the cardboard slipcover and all match so far with the exception of this title.

Because it's not part of the "real" Bond line...

Goldfinger for me is THE Bond film of all time. It has all the right elements in the right mixture..it has the gadgets, the great story and most of all it has the '60's' feel to it.

    And a Beatles mention. :D

No, it's not - like the 1967 "Casino Royale", it's "unofficial Bond" that was able to exist due to some legal loopholes. "Octopussy" was the "official" Bond movie from 1983...

    Interesting how early Bond dominates.

Thanks. I am enjoying each Bond and hope that MGM release them all this year.

It really is a great film and you are right, if Connery was in it, it would be thought of as the best film, hands down. Not to mention having Diana Rigg certainly helps.

In particular, Bond faces a villain who could really whoop his ****, if the storyline allowed it.

I'd agree. He certainly was to my mind the most memorable AND lethal.

Connery & Shaw still the best fight scene in any Bond film.

Goldfinger is a very good and very influential movie but Honor Blackman somehow gives me the creeps. This is a purely personal (read: sexual) thing. Also, part of the film is spent playing golf. When I think of heart pounding, edge of your seat tension, I think golf.

I went with the new Casino Royale. The way the Poker game plays out is the least realistic thing in the picture but at least it is broken up with a near death experience. Vesper Lynd is by far the most captivating female co-star (I can't just call her a "Bond girl") and I love the ending where they took one of cinema's most trite cliches and made it seem completely fresh.
