I was thinking of picking up the SACD of Boston's debut album, but I already have a very clean copy of the original orange label Epic vinyl, which sounds very good to me. Has anyone here ever compared the original vinyl to the SACD, & if so, what did you think? For sound quality reasons, do you think think there is any reason for me to pick up the SACD?

    Thanks,
    Fred

I wonder that, too. I haven't heard the original vinyl, but the SACD is great. The original Japanese CD pressings are very good as well, but the SACD is the best version I've heard.

Yes, buy it. Mark Wilder mastered it and its as good as it will ever be.

I also like the Wally mastered vinyl but the SACD is more of a "pure" listen for me. No worrying about table alignment, cartridge choice, phono pre amp complimenting the cart, digital conversion for the needle drop CD-R, etc... You see where I'm going. The SACD was made with the best gear with one of the best mastering engineers I know of and without all the inter steps of vinyl production and playback.

I don't have the vinyl anymore. I think the SACD would would fare well against the vinyl.

I have both the Wally vinyl, and the SACD. The SACD is a bit cleaner. You can differentiate between the instruments better. However, the Wally vinyl is a bit more musical.

ditto, although jamie brought up some good points about the ease of the SACD and mark wilder's skills. i just love 'wally' jobs. i picked up a charlie daniels band million mile reflection 'wally' LP in the $0.50 bin recently, and i swear i'm in the studio with the devil down in georgia.

I haven't compared the vinyl to the SACD, but yes you should buy it. As someone else wrote, the SACD sounds great, probably as good as it ever will sound.

Yes, the vinyl done by Wally Traggout is the best it will ever sound on vinyl.

but the SACD is a different experience without that dash of compression....which MAKES the Lp sound good.

There is quite a bit of difference in the orange label and the white label "promo-copy" if you can find one. I was able to pick up a near mint promo copy a couple of years ago and I gave my orange label to a friend, that same friend recently got the SACD and brought it over for a comparison-listen, kindda dull compared to the promo vinyl, seems a little lifeless, however you have to keep in mind that a lot of this depends upon your TT setup verses you digital setup, I mean it would be unfair to compare a VPI with a ruby cartridge to a generic all format digital player.

Thanks for all the responses, everybody. At least I now know that this IS a very good sounding SACD, as nobody so far has had anything bad to say about it. That LP does sound very good, though. Hmm. I guess I'm going to at least consider picking up the SACD. I should probably just get it before it goes OOP, or gets tough to find.

Can't really go wrong getting a copy of it and it'll give you a chance to do an A/B/X
and also an equipment re-evaluation. Never know what you might discover. :righton:

  12. I think you would be very wise to pick up the SACD while it's in the bins.

Does anyone have an idea, why the Mastersound edition is bashed here at the forum? It's mastered by Mark Wilder, also.

If anyone is interested, it was posted over on musictap that Epic/Legacy is putting out the first two Boston albums, Boston and Don't Look Back, on April 4. It hasn't been announced if these will be expanded remasters or not.

Sony will release new Redbook versions...

    from MusicTAP:
Legacy and Epic will collectively produce a reissue for Boston and their self-titled debut as well as Don't Look Back. These 2 discs will arrive on April 4. I'll have more on this as they date gets closer and I receive more info.

The MasterSound gold disc sounds bright to me. I'm guessing Wilder used the master tapes, but it sounds like he did a lot of tweaking there. When listening to the SACD, I get the impression that Wilder applied restraint in his mastering.

For those who do not have the Boston SACD, it's worth noting that it is one of the easier Sony single-layer SACDs to track down these days. I still see it at Best Buy, and I'm sure the major mail-order retailers still have it.

This is great news! Of course, I'd prefer hybrid SACDs, but I will take well-done CDs. I can't wait to compare them to the original Japanese pressings.

This title continues to be restocked at my Best Buy. I don't play my old vinyl anymore because this SACD sounds so good!

    Hi,

Get that SACD! It is excellent and is the best digital version by miles. I love original Wally Traugott mastered Epic vinyl but this is as good. You won't be disappointed with this! :goodie:

It's an excellent SACD, but it seems a bit weak in the bass when compared to the original CBS CD and the original vinyl. I like the transparency of the high end though. I'm tempted to dub it over the analog outs and EQ the bass a bit...

    Folks,

You're not going to like this but I feel the original CD is better; more balanced sound. Music needs WEIGHT to work.

    Sue me!

Wow! The first dissenter, & it's Steve, no less!

Steve, how do you think the original CD compares to the original vinyl, just out of curiosity? I used to have the original CD, but got
rid of it when I picked up a clean copy of the vinyl.
