Ah, a bittersweet article for me. I loved being mentioned by name in Rolling Stone, but most of the folks at the record company were pretty pissed off. After all, their huge publicity department and their 200 grand a year salaries couldn't get any artist mentioned in that magazine for anything.

So, I made some enemies, but they sold a bunch of records without having to pay a dime for promotion.

    Steve,

If you are going to make enemies, there are worse ways to do it than being recognized for good work. :)

I had a buddy who took a job as a supervisor at a small manufacturing plant (making video tapes) straight out of college. He figured he would be loved by all when within the first 6 weeks, the shift he supervised broke all previous productivity and quality records due to his enthusiastic and active management. In actuality, all of his peers and a good number of his superiors got P.O.d because they thought he was trying to make them look bad. The only people who seemed to like him were the employees on his shift because he treated them better than the other supervisors, which was also the secret to his performance.

    Regards,

Ahhh don't forget, it was records and CDs, Steve! I found an Xth generation copy of this on LP as well as CD!

And it was the beginning of your 'real' career as an audiophile specialist! I shudder to think of where we'd be without your work....

    Crazy!!:shake:

You did them a good turn and they're mad at you. Egos and foolishness. Human nature I guess.

    Matt,

Is that the nature of the business? Is the music biz worse than other industries? Just curious as I have no experience in it.

There are plenty of good, decent people in the entertainment industry, and most people I've known personally and professionally when I was in LA are good people, but some are just real jerks. It is a different culture, though (image, status, etc. feels more prominent), so that might have something to do with it.

    >>>.Boy, do I remember that Buddy Holly LP.

I was working as a producer for a tiny label here in Manhattan, Quintole Records. On a visit to Modern Album, they gave me a copy because I showed some interest. Loved it then, love it now.

Hey Steve, the label I worked at was owned by Lee and Michael Halpern...do you remember those crazy guys? The old man was legendary in the record biz of the 60s and 70s.

Didn't they have the "rights" to the Star Club material for awhile?

    >>>Actually, Luke, I think what they had was a master tape. They also had the rights and masters to Twisted Sisters first LP, when they were a club band. Also Barbara Streisand live masters from a nightclub right before she signed to Columbia Records. We put out all goofy stuff like that. Some Sinatra also, from like 1943. Lots of "grey area" stuff.

It was fun job, I got to create all these releases and really stretch my imagination....I just couldnt spend any money on them!!!

    >>>Yea, especially in this case!! :)))

I do have to be honest tho. They were very good to me, and Michael taught me TONs about manufacturing, sent me to plants to learn lacquer cutting, plating, pressing, etc. He even let me do a session (The Old Bethpage Singers) my first week.

For a 23 year old kid just out of school it was a dream come true.

Wish I had stayed in the business!!

Ahh, the review that started it all for me. My first Buddy & my first Steve... too bad the online version is missing that great portrait of Buddy. :(

BTW I cut my review out and put it in the LP jacket. :)

Steve, Do you know the "story" behind the Vigotone CD set "What You've Been A Missin'" ?

It is true Marie Elena Holly let the producers of that bootleg box set, have unlimited access to the recordings of what she has/had of Buddy's ?????

    Thanks !

Not a clue. I'm sure Mrs. Holly would never have done such a thing.
