I like what Walsh brings to the band, but I used to have to stop the album at the end of side one to avoid this song. This made me doubly mad when I finally heard ‘The Last Resort’ and ‘Try And Love Again’, which are masterpieces.

As I recall Neil wasn't a big fan of Dallas Taylor's drumming either- part of the reason he had Dallas ousted from the band.

Right. Neil didn't like Dallas, which is why Johnny Barbata was brought in. I always thought getting rid of Dallas was a power move on Neil's part because he was Stills' guy.

Correct, it was both- Neil says something in Shakey along the lines of "Dallas was really Stephen's drummer, and their trip was playing a whole lotta notes, which wasn't my trip."

To hear Dallas Taylor tell it, of course, it was because Neil thought Dallas had a thing for his wife, nothing at all to do with music. Ah yes, Prisoner Of Woodstock...one of the few books I've read in my life where I seriously felt like taking a shower when I was done reading it.

After hearing Dallas' playing on Manassas, I'm less convinced that Neil's decision was based on purely musical grounds.

Is that a recommendation? I’m taking it as one. Most rock autobiographies are way too watered-down and lawyer-approved for me. Actually, I can’t recall even one that isn’t.

Hmm... sounds like more "Neil being Neil" attitude. When Buffalo Springfield last reunited (2o11), they did so with the agreement that Neil would pick the bassist (Rick Rosas) and Stephen would pick the drummer (Joe Vitale). I saw the band the first night of the tour @ The Fox Theater, Oakland and thought both choices were good ones, especially Vitale. But if Neil says in his book what you say he does (I haven't read it, only glanced through it), that implies that Neil was unhappy with Vitale, and by extension, that may have been one of the reasons he pulled out.
Tssk, tssk, Neil! Do you have to control EVERYTHING?

The last minute of so of this video is priceless. Thanks for starting this thread!! Huge Springfield fan and I've never seen this video before.

I'm just thankful this brief reunion even happened and it was captured for posterity with everyone all smiles.

Thanks for posting this video. Man, that 80's cheesy keyboard sound is the worst and Steinberger tone isn't so hot either, but we all used chorus pedals. Funny to see a Marshall head on top of 4 mini cabinets rather than one big 4x12 cab. Seeing the whole band together is so cool. And just jamming together like anyone else would in someone's house down the street.

  19. In Shakey, McDonough says that there was the 1986 "reunion" which was videotaped and then another reunion a couple years later which Neil didn't show for and was instead in studio. Seems that the Wikipedia entry may be combining the two into one.

How so? Dallas Taylor's drumming is one of things I liked most about Manassas (although to be fair there's almost nothing I don't like about Manassas:righton:). He could play busy, sure, but he could show restraint as well, especially on the quieter/acoustic stuff.
Read Dallas Taylor's book at yer own risk. It's sleazy. Watered down and lawyer approved it is not, although you can easily see why CSN made him persona non grata once the thing was published (in spite of Graham Nash writing the introduction!)
Good gawd, man, back in the seventies what male rock star didn't see Joni naked?:p And I'm not talking about the For The Roses gatefold picture either:laugh::laugh::laugh:
I don't believe so...Neil seems to do all the bowing out when it comes to working with any of these guys (or anybody else, for that matter)

That's what I meant. His playing was really good on Manassas. I love listening to Dallas Taylor's bass drum on the Manassas album. I don't think Neil had reason to complain, and the "solution" of Johnny Barbata didn't really address his concern IMO. If Neil wanted Ralph Molina, he didn't get it.
