I picked this up recently on DCC and have a couple of questions.

    1) Why wasn't this a gold disc issue? It certainly was a big seller in it's day.

    2) The material seems bass-shy to me. Knowing Steve's work, it probably is the way the master tapes sound. I think it could have used some low-end EQ like the Mamas and Papas disc, though.

    3) Was this disc mastered with tube equipment?

    4) Who owns the rights to this LP and can we expect a SACD reissue?

    Thanks!

I finally got a copy of this recently after keeping my eyes peeled for it for a couple of months, and I too was a a little surprised at the sound... although it was in fact lighter in the bass than I was expecting (something I just chalked up to the engineering of the original sessions-- it was a relatively low-budget project), what surprised me was that there wasn't more "bite" to the guitars.

Don't get me wrong, it's still much better than the old EMI-Capitol issue, but I was just expecting a slightly different "sound", I guess.

The moral of the story is that you can only work with what you've got, and there's no sense in deforming the sound of a tape just to meet what may very well be your mistaken expectations!! :D

And by the way, Steve, thanks for taking on this record... always loved Brian and the 'Cats!!

I have this CD. DZS-169. It says Mastered for this compact disc by Steve Hoffman. That's why I got it.

    Steve:

If it helps, here's the track line-up:

    1. Rock this Town
    2. Buiilt for Speed
    3. Rev it Up and Go
    4. Stray Cat Strut
    5. Little Miss Prissy
    6. Rumble in Brighton
    7. Runaway Boys
    8. Lonely Summer Nights
    9. Double Talkin' Baby
    10. You Don't Believe Me
    11. Jeannie, Jeannie, Jeannie
    12. Baby Blue Eyes

And, as they reported above, DZS-169 "Mastered for this compact disc by Steve Hoffman".

Although, since you mention it, the data ring mastering number on **my** disc does end in "...RE1"

    Someone swapped a master, maybe?

    -Kevin

Oh-- and "Rock This Town" is mono... or something **very** close to it!!

Steve, I seem to remember a thread about this CD long ago. I believe it was two boards ago. You stated that you did the best you could with the mastertape (or words to that effect).

I could believe that... it doesn't sound like a sonic marvel to begin with.

I used to own the original UK singles, and they weren't particularly great, either... (sound-wise, that is!).

I recall he said the opposite. I believe he said it was quick transfer and not to bother hunting it down.
