If so, how? I am well aware that a sound surround receiver can be used, but can an ordinary integrated amp with auxiliary inputs be used?

Depends on the TV my Panasonic Plasma has rca analogue out. Optical out could be used via a cheap DAC... but have to select optical out to stereo

You may have to check your settings / options to determine if there is a 'TV speaker on/off' setting, or maybe a 'fixed or variable output setting'. I would suggest a fixed output, but then you would have to rely on your amp remote to to adjust the volume.

Aha..I knew it was going too easily! I do have the speaker on/off option on the set,but no remote control for the amp....Wifey will never stand for that(she prefers to sit with the remote).

Well then you should be able to use the "variable output" setting which will be controlled by the TV remote (as far as I know, I'm not sure if you model will work the same way)
