Sorry, guys. I looked at the thread heading and it only mentioned "Who's Next".

    Maybe I confused the issue.

Needed: Who's Next AND MBB&B mastered by SH from Canada (since I'm going there)

I think I'm clear on the Who's Next.

Seems that ALL Canada issues of MBB&B are the correct version.

    That's right?????

Yep, appears to be some sort of pattern there. Can't figure out exactly what it is, though. ;)

I agree. There is not much difference between the 1st US press from Japan and the Canadian press, although I think the 1st US press is the best. Of course, not everyone agrees. I have a friend who insists that the Canadian is the better sounding of the two. ;)

  6. It's only 5.30 AM or so and at first glance/read I didn't notice the "Per Luke" and I was thinking, that's weird, why is Steve talking in the third person? For a moment I was reminded of that Seinfeld episode where that Jimmy character (with the weird shoes) at the health club takes a liking to Elaine but keeps refering to himself in the third person. Thus tricking Elaine into going out with him. ..."Jimmy likes Elaine...Jimmy is sweet on you. Jimmy can jump."

I'm in Wpg. for my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary, so I don't have my music collection with me, only a portion. For the trip I did bring Steve's MBBB. :) (If things around the house get a little crazy, I can grab my portable CD player and chill.) The label number on the disc IS, MCBBD 37001.

I remember from my days in music retail that most of the Canadian record labels use different prefixes for label numbers. The thing to look at is the actual number, to see if it is the same version as the American. Example, the Canadian Warner CD catalogue numbers in the 80s and 90s used CD as the prefix. Example, Fleetwood Mac - Rumours is CD 3010. I believe the U.S. catalogue number was 2-3010. As far as that slight change on the label number on MBBB, that may have occured when MCA Canada moved the disc from mid-price to budget. If my memory serves me well, the letters on MCA Canada's label numbers directly reference the which price code the album is in.

I'll be out with my Dad later. He wants me to take him to A+B Sound to look at DVD players. While I'm there, I might just happen to wonder over to, OH, the CD section;) :D, and I'll re-confirm Steve's, Who's Next CD number for y'all. I'm sure it's 37217.

    BMG version at 43:25

I just had my sister check out my copy sitting in storage at my mothers house in Phoenix along with a few hundred other cd. Luckly enough it had the magic 43:25 time. Great! Now I just got to get it sent up here.
This one is a BMG music club version. Cant wait.

I think I will finally sell my sealed mfsl version ( I paid only $35.00 for !!!) and use that money to pick up A BUNCH of Steve's SACD's, now thats a great trade off.

Steve is glad that MatrixMan loves Who's Next. Steve thinks that Audio Girl is probably a knockout.

It's good that you did that, Anthony. WAIT, I'm lapsing into that Twilight Zone episode with Billy Mumy. DON'T PUT ME IN THE CORN FIELD, ANTHONY!!!!

The Mofi is sourced from the 1995 remix, is it not?

    Krab,
The MoFi LAL and Who's Next are the remixes. They sound nearly indistinguishable to me from the regular MCA remixes. The booklets are inferior on the MFSL however. I have both of these and consider them a bit of a rip off from the dying days of MFSL.

John and Krabapple, wasn't the Who's Next taken from Pete Townshend's personal 2nd generation copy and not the masters like Steve's version?...Luke?

Is the Who Sings My Generation CD at hmv.com the true mono mix version?

Let's clear everything up right now:

37001 is MBBB, not the remix/remaster of Who's Next.

The MoFi of Who's Next was taken from the same tapes used to prepare the 1995 remix. As such, 5 of the songs on the original album were remixed, and a number of tracks have noise reduction. It isn't clear where the non-remixed tracks came from, but *probably* not the same tape Steve used. The MoFi has bonus tracks, just like the 1995 CD.

The TWSMG CD from hmv.com does indeed contain the mono mix. IMO, other than Circles, it sounds pretty good. A tad "cold" sounding, but the sources seem good. Note that TKAA is the edited version - get the box set for the unedited version (in mono).

I just put in my order for MBB&B and Who's Next and I picked up Buddy Holly FTOMT as well. The prices are sick. How do they get away with that? My total was like $25.00 with shipping.

What about the Magic Bus CD. Didn't someone mention something good about this in an earlier post? Just curious

I don't think there's really anything special about it sound-wise. The mix of Dr. Jekyl is different from the Rarities version, though.

Hey Luke, I'm curious. Which version is the 43:13?? Do you have that disc? I wanted to ask some questions about it if you do.

I have one of the early Japanese discs (pressed in Japan for MCA inc, blah blah) which clocks in at that time. It is definitely a JVC pressing from the early days, and I bought it new in a longbox when it first came out (I think '84 or '85). But it has the hiss between tracks, no click in WGFA, and totally sounds like a Steve Hoffman job. I'm very much perplexed now and think you might have your timings backward. Though you know much more about this than I do.

FWIW I did see a BMG edition today which clocked in at 43:25, but a much later pressing (US). The inner ring had a date code, I think 4/88. I may even pick that one up for comparison purposes.

It's possible multiple versions clock in at that time, but one I know for sure has that time is the "Manufactured In The USA..." version.

Well, the US (above) version has hiss between tracks as well, so that's not really a way to determine what version you've got. Also, the ONLY version with the click in WGFA is the Canadian - both the Japanese and the BMG *don't* have it.

I just put in my Canadian, Japanese, and BMG pressings, and all come in around 43:25 (actually 43:23 and 43:24, but that varies from CD player to CD player). My USA copy is still MIA from my move, but I can assure you the time was 43:13, as I had all 4 discs together when I wrote that initial note.

The "bad" version has a bit more hiss, as well as a more narrow soundstage. Odd, since NO other version (that I've heard) is narrowed down at all.

Let me see if I can dig up my USA copy to help out a bit. FWIW, I bought that USA copy in probably '91 or '92, IIRC.

Thanks. If you can find your US copy, please let me know what you find. I think I will pick up the BMG just to check it out & compare with my copy.
