The word around Capitol Records is that they’re about to launch a re-master re-release program for the Beatles’ Apple Records catalog.

Those were the days, my friend. We thought they’d never end. We were wrong.
The last time someone cleaned up and re-released the Apple catalog was back in 1991. Since then, most of the releases have drifted out of print.

Apple Records was not a great success, but it had its shining moments. The catalog consists of James Taylor’s first album ever, plus albums by Badfinger, Billy Preston, R&B great Doris Troy, Mary Hopkin (pictured), and Jackie Lomax.

There are also early solo albums by Ringo Starr and George Harrison that have fallen by the wayside.

Apple’s shiniest moment, for my money, is Badfinger’s “Straight Up” album, produced by Harrison and Todd Rundgren. It’s just perfection–and that’s the name of one of the songs. It also contains the classic hits “Day After Day” and “Baby Blue.” It’s so good, it should be framed.

I will be particularly interested in Doris Troy’s self titled album. Troy’s biggest hit for Atlantic in the 60s was “Just One Look.” Later she sang, quite beautifully, on Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.”

No, the vocalist on "Great Gig In The Sky" was Clare Torry (NOT Doris Troy). Big error there!!! You can't believe everything you read!! Arnie

Is there a reason to expect them to use noise reduction, Candy, or are you just expressing general skepticism? Does anyone know who might be in line to re-master them?

Wow, she looks like Paul McCartney!

Well, Doris Troy did sing backing vocals on Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" album, but she did not sing lead on "Great Gig In The Sky", thus the writer of the article is not in error.

Why wouldn't the remastering come from EMI? The Apple master tapes are originated in England, where they probably still are. I'm very skeptical about this.

What about the Elephant's Memory albums that the Lennon's produced and the David Peel album? Would those be in this batch? I have always wanted to hear those. This is awesome.

Will they include simulated noisy Capitol vinyl sounds for nostalgic reasons?

I found a sealed copy of this cd earlier this week.
Maybe I should put it on ebay while I can. :)

Not, I'm sure, without some justification. I collect old radio recordings and it's gotten to the point where there's more noise reduction artifacts than show, I'm afraid.

It's just the Apple recordings sounded overall so good in my memory.

I have the entire Apple back catalog on CD except Ravi Shankar's Raga, John Tavner Celtic Requiem, Lon and Derek Van Eaton's Brother, Elephants Memory and David Peel's The Pope Smokes Dope. I would like to get those on CD. I would imagine the Phil Spector Christmas Album is a no go.

Unless there is marked improvement in sound and or a slew of unreleased bonus tracks I'll pass on the rest. I don't know about you guys but I'm tired of re-buying stuff unless it's really special.

Just somewhat skeptical (or with a c for the Brits) as several of the early 90's Apple titles had a fair coating of Nr applied and unless the team that did a certain set of much talked about remasters last year gets the gig, the Nr camp are still ruling the roost.

I once spoke on the phone with the person who mastered the earlier Apple CDs and he claimed he did not use NR, that it was applied after the masters left his hands.

Maybe if the same team that did the Beatles remasters handles these, NR won't be a problem.

I think Troy might have been singing with Torry... but definetly not in a way that stands out.

I clearly hear Troy during "Eclipse" just as the dark Side album is concluding.

With regard to the Apple discs... there were a lot of non-album 45s that would make
    for a pretty good compilation.

I'd be very surprised if the "Pope Smokes Dope" comes out on CD.

I love that album but its very much a product of its time.

I think the big question is does Yoko like that album since she would
    probably have to approve it.

The other question is can she stomach David Peel showing up across
the street from the Dakota hawking copies of the CD in Central Park
(a very likely scenario if the thing goes back into print).

I saw Peel perform in a bar once in NJ. It was a very strange event.

Unfortunate. Better to look for pre-90s then. Miracles do happen, however. Maybe they'll have an epiphany.

Perhaps you meant you spoke with the person who compiled the CD's? It was the mastering guy(s) who added the NR (probably Mr. SoundaCatmakes) after the masters left his hands. I didn't really want to say his name (like Lord Voldemort).

How about a disc of the Apple Singles not represented on LP? Thingamybob and God Save Ox, and King of Fuh for example.

I have that MJQ Jasmine Tree CD but don't think I've ever played it. I was intrigued by the Apple label so I bought it and promptly forgot about it until a couple weeks ago. What's it worth these days?
