For this fan of Sgt. Fury & the Howling Commandos, this 1st panel from the 1st ever Fury/Shield series was a mind blower!

A great page, and the combination of Kirby and John Severin works better in practice that I would have thought it could work in theory! But, this is actually the splash from the second issue of the Shield series.

Here’s the splash from the first issue, by Kirby with Dick Ayers:

i associate Dr Strange with the Defenders, I don't think he was ever a regular member of the Avengers.

The thing with the Avengers is that the roster changed quite often so the 'right' Avengers is the one you started reading. I always consider Vision, Scarlet Witch, Henry Pym and Janet Pym all core Avengers, partly because for much of the time they only appeared in the Avengers and didn't have their own books like Cap, Iron Man, Thor etc.

The great thing about Captain Marvel is that for comic fans it's a real treasure trove of Marvel history with all the back story and different people involved. It's like a thread that has run through the Marvel comics for decades that ties so many different things together.

In Marvel's comic called What If? (where they answer what if various events in Marvel history had proceeded differently), they did a story that showed what would have happened if every character who had been an Avenger remained an Avenger. The story featured so many characters that they were ineffective because there were so many of them.

HAH - funny! ...every Kirby panel already comes pre-enlarged at the point when his art meets your brain!

I liked this when I was a kid so sure, why not. I'll see Shazam when it arrives in theaters!

Looks good in the suit. I hope Jude Law gets some action in the film as Mar-Vell too. Starlin's run on that book was one of my favorites.

"Most powerful"? Remains to be seen. She ain't no Adam Warlock. Granted I haven't read new comics since 1994 so who knows what has transpired in the interim. :)

Completely in on this one. I was a fan of the revival in the 70s. Looks like they have figured out the way to present a boy inside an adult. Fun.

  18. As I recall Lee also didn’t like Kirby’s take on the idea as well.

I used to read Captain Marvel comics, before we called them graphic novels.

I like Brie Larson, so although I don't usually see many super hero movies, I'll probably be interested in this one.

When Marvelman was 1st 'revived' in the pages of Warrior (this landmark series has been reprinted a number of times, talk about a tale that would make for a great movie!) the artist (Gary Leach) used Paul Newman as his guide on what MM would look like. Newman was also used as the original template for the silver age Green Lantern (Hal Jordan).

Didn't DC successfully sue Fawcett comics which forced them to cease publication of Captain Marvel?
