Lithium can cause a myriad of problems for the body. It's hard on the organs especially the heart, kidneys and liver. If you are under dosed it is ineffective for it's treatment of mania. If you have to much in your blood you get Lithium poisoning. Regular labs are needed to check the levels in your blood as well as making sure your organs are not being compromised.

Kidney and liver problems can cause confusion and mental fog. These organs help metabolize medications and other things (food) you put in your body and filter your blood and help eliminate waste though urination. In Carrie Fisher's case, since she did so many drugs she may have had some impairment of these organs or could very well have had drug induced brain damage from the drugs themselves or a transient ischemic attack also known as a mini stroke.
