Side Glances was kinda-sorta topical, enough to be printed on the editorial page of a lot of newspapers. Usually some old dowagers would sit around a bridge table and crack wise about pop culture, but rock n' roll references were rarely this specific (May 6, 1968):
I totally forgot about the "Grandma" comic strip! I tend to be nostalgic about the comic strips of my youth, so I'm amazed that "Grandma" was completely missing from my memory.
Heh, this one has 'stayed with me' for 37 years (assuming that's a date). Would be completely lost on half the population now, on both a 'the pips' and 'The Pips' basis.
When I was a kid, one of my problems was that my girlfriend's mothers always liked me more than my girlfriends. Just thinking about that makes me want to go out to a record store.
As "The Yellow Kid" was considered to be the very first comic strip, this is very likely the first comic strip about records Maybe a different surviving print reads better?

That's a joke that would work better if heard, not read - since we know the cartoon character is "Beetle", not "Beatle", it doesn't really work in print. Oh, who am I kidding? It's a lame joke no matter the format!
