I will come clean about Cher's early albums: I didn't hear them until much, much later. As a kid growing up, I always liked her singles on the radio, but I used my weekly allowance for albums by my other favorites Nancy Sinatra, Petula Clark, Bobbie Gentry and Jackie DeShannon, who seemed to have new albums out every time I went to the store!

When I finally did hear the music from the albums on the two double-LP compilations, "Superpak" (released in 1972 to capitalize on the renewed interest in Sonny & Cher due to their popular TV show), the songs and production all sounded the same to me! I still love some of those early singles "Bang, Bang", "You'd Better Sit Down Kids" and "All I Really Want To Do", but the albums are not my favorites from her catalogue.

Really would love it if this era was treated the same way Bear Records does their releases. Original Mono and stereo mixes, alternate takes out unreleased tracks etc.

Nice albums. Love a bit of Cher. Always moved by the latter-day HOpe You Find It.

Honestly, aside from "Bang, Bang" what was Sonny thinking having Cher sing "Ol Man River", "The Girl From Ipanema" and "It's Not Unusual"? The same sounding production continues on this album with it being hard to tell the songs apart. And for the record, I prefer Nancy Sinatra's version of "Bang, Bang" to Cher's!

I prefer these things in mono. The stereo is terrible, horribly mixed. It took me a while to figure out that All I Really Want To Do was a Sonny and Cher record with Cher doing both parts. Not sure what market these albums were aimed at, teens or their parents? Or were they just to keep her busy? A couple of semi hits. Jackson Hwy was a better record and I think that's because Sonny was not hands on running the show.

"A Young Girl" is one of Sonny's best production jobs. He uses every Phil Spector trick he learned to his advantage. Makes it more trashy than the original, like a three minute Lifetime movie.

I didn't get to know the album until much later, but the single of "You Better Sit Down Kids" with "Mama..." was a favorite of mine. Sonny FINALLY changed up the sound a bit!

I like all the 60s albums a lot, but they were sped up to make her voice not sound so masculine. The only way I can listen to them is slowed down and luckily I have a CD player with pitch control. They sound great at the proper speed.

Backstage is my favorite 60s album by Cher. Harold Battiste had a heavier hand in the production and it shows. Carnival is fantastic. Wish she did more songs like that. Masters Of War is a superb version. She really felt that one as she was a big Dylan fan. Love the strings on the album and some of the bizarre song choices, like Click Song. It All Adds Up Now is another favorite. It was written by Doug Sahm and to this day I've never heard of another version of the song done by anyone.

She's No Better Than Me is another fave. I love when she does low-key songs like that.

Should've been a proper 3rd album cut instead of relegated to the B-side of Alfie.

alexpop Power pop + other bad habits....

    Prefer Sonny & Cher.
Nancy Sinatra stole the sixties pop princess crown ( How Does That Grab You Darlin :) )
Fave Cher song "Gypsies Tramps Thieves " also the hairband Desmond Child late eighties produced album.
Did have all here Liberty LPs at one time. Eclectic label Liberty ...Jan & Dean, PJ Proby, Canned Heat, Bonzo Dog Band.
