Not to mention Wilson doesn't do remastering, as a general rule...he does remixing. Not that he couldn't remaster (he has with his own work); but I just don't believe there's much appeal for him, from the interviews we've done, with simply remastering. I think it's being able to remix and bring greater clarity and transparency to the layers that really cranks his Evinrude...

Thanks to this thread for getting me motivated to pick this up finally on vinyl. I passed it by countless times, but didn’t want want to miss out on getting a copy. It’s is really great...I like it better than the high res download version. Very clear, with the various instruments and voices coming to the front at the right times.

I got this from Barnes and Noble online. They sell it from Movie Mars(?) not their own stock. It took two weeks to get here but it finally made it $34.00. Can't wait to get home and listen.
Don't pay the big Ebay money there are copies available.

    Just got remix version.
    CD.
Once again, just like he did with Tull, Steve Wilson did a stellar job.
The previous CD version was just loud and blaring.
    Harsh.
This remix is more subtle, balanced and has more clarity.
So far I listened to first two tracks.
Will prob. post in future for the other tracks.
Would like to do track by track.
“Movin In” one can enjoy Terry Kathy cool soul rhythm grooves on guitar much more so than the previous cd.
“The Road”, the horn intro is better defined.
Can clearly make out Parazaider’s clarinet.
On both tracks the drums sound more natural.

    Wish list.
Have Steve Wilson remix Derek and the Dominoes album “Layla”.
Then give him the Cream lps.

The Cream albums recorded at Atlantic couldn’t be remixed.

I’m not sure how different a SW remix of Layla would sound.

Chicago II is one of the Rosetta Stones of classic rock. Of course purists will say the album name is just Chicago.

Ewww. I wouldn't put Chicago down by comparing them to the RS. Chicago had real chops. RS were a glorified blues pub band.

Finished “side 1” of the Wilson remix of Chicago and onto “Wake Up Sunshine”
The remix is excellent, with separation between the unison rhythm parts of the piano and rhythm guitar.
And this is a great, laid back, nicely arranged song.
Reminiscent of the Beatles “Good Day Sunshine” with a Rascals feel to it.

Finished “side 2” of the Wilson remix.
Some observations on this excellent remix.
The percussion much crisper on “Make Me Smile”
    Jumps out.
Once again, the seperation of the rhythm parts of the piano and guitar is better defined.
    Observations on the group.
Terry Kath is a very good, soulful singer.
Very Ray Charles-like if there is such a word.

Of all the Chicago studio albums the best covers had to be Chicago(silver), Chicago V(wood), Chicago VII(hieroglyphics), Chicago X(Chocolate bar) and Chicago XI(map). You just don't see that attention to detail with album covers anymore. Even Steven Wilson's own solo LP covers have been rather hit & miss.

Maybe, but the images(sans the Ferris wheel & railroad) look straight out of something that would have been in ancient Egypt. I wonder what archaeologists 1000 years from now will think about it!

The images are “Americana” represented in leatherwork.
Nothing to do with Egypt, hieroglyphics.....

Been playing my Chicago Wilson remix (cd) this evening.........best I've heard this album sound. Nice separation of instruments, and the vocals are tastefully upfront, unlike some of the masterings of the original mix where everything is buried and muddy. :edthumbs:

That would be great; I'd be really interested to see what Wilson could do with Layla. In some ways, Dowd's sounds are Holy Grail territory, but as a huge Jim Gordon fan, I'd love to hear the drums with better clarity (not to mention Radle's bass).

Pretty sure the drums are what they are. They were recorded in stereo to two tracks, so there's nothing to do other than EQ and level.

I hope that's not true. Anyway, don't want to hijack the thread.
