I did not see a thread on it and I just heard about this so I thought I would share:

Production is officially underway on Warner Bros. Pictures‘ upcoming big screen CHiPs remake and we’ve got a look at photos from the set of the buddy cop movie featuring stars Dax Shepard as highway patrolman Jon Baker along with Michael Pena as Frank “Ponch” Poncherello. Check them out in the gallery below!

In addition to starring in the film, Shepard wrote and is directing the feature, which also stars Kristen Bell (“House of Lies,” Frozen), Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Insurgent), Adam Brody (“The O.C.,” Jennifer’s Body), and Vincent D’Onofrio (Jurassic World, “Marvel’s Daredevil”).

The original series, which ran between 1977 and 1983, focused on two police officers who patrolled the California highways on motorcycles and starred Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada in the lead roles.

Said to be in the vein of buddy cop movies like Bad Boys and Lethal Weapon, the CHiPs remake was written by Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgove before Shepard did his own draft. Andrew Panay is producing.

CHiPs was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid.

I haven't seen the show in dog years, but I'm fairly sure that if I revisit it now it will have aged horribly.

Coincidentally, about a week ago I watched an '80s B-Movie with Erik "Ponch" Estrada in it called "Light Blast," in which he played a tough gun-toting San Francisco cop. I remember thinking while I watched the movie "Hey, they finally let Ponch shoot a gun!" -- cuz if memory serves, none of the cops on CHiPs ever used - or even drew - their weapons. Haha!

Anywhoo... I'm not familiar with any of the cast in this movie aside from Kristen Bell and Dax Sheperd (who are husband and wife, I believe). They both starred in a pretty cool little indie car-crash movie a few years ago called "Hit and Run" (which Shepherd also directed); if this CHiPs flick is in the same ballpark it could be a fun watch.

  5. Man, if there's not a Love Boat movie in the works I'll eat my theoretical hat.

I liked it as a kid too but I bet if I were to watch it now it would be lame. I remember as a kid thinking the bad traffic in LA was due to all the wrecks. I assumed this was a daily event in southern California.

Don't know if its spoof or serious. Prob gonna be terrible but we shall see.

I think I remember CHiPS 2000 or something that was a made for TV movie.

Even as a wee lad, I could tell when a Spectacular Highway Crash of the Week was about to occur, because all of the cars on said highway were suddenly 10 to 15 years old.

The original show wasn't serious. How could this movie possibly be serious?

Will we get to hear similar theme music to what was used for the 2nd season on...the cheesy disco-ish 70-'s-porn theme music? :)

Yeah, CHiPs could be kind of funny if done right. The original show wasn't really serious at all. The choice to make 22 Jumpstreet into a comedy was questionable given the original show was pretty serious.

Dax Shepard's "Hit and Run" was surprisingly interesting, funny, and enjoyable. He got to indulge his love for cars and racing on that one, even doing some of his own stunts. CHiPs could be updated in a similar vein. I became a huge fan of Shepard because of the Jason Katims version of "Parenthood," and I always enjoy Michael Pena and Kristen Bell (Shepard's wife), so I'm definitely in.

Yet another big screen adaptation that mocks the source material. Who exactly is this made for? The all-important youth audience doesn't know the brand, and I'd guess most of the shows original fans are too old to care or want to see it treated like this.

Could work as good as the Starsky & Hutch movie, which I thought was pretty funny. Probably won't be as good as the "21 Jump Street" movies.
