She's right, pop has become porn lite.

I agree totally with that. Pop music is 90% about dance moves now.

Eh, I don't know. Kind of sounds like whining to me. Someone who's into Kate Bush isn't going to go to one of her shows expecting Miley Cyrus and vice-versa. Different strokes for different folks. Yes, its kind of sad that Cyrus has many more fans than Kate, but that's the nature of the beast. Sex sells and all that.

Totally agree with her, and it's not surprising to hear an opinion like that from someone like Chrissie Hynde.

Right on Chrissie! Today's pop music is so atrocious that the porn-lite approach at least keeps it filed under "entertainment."

There wasn't sex selling pop music in the 70's??

I agree. I sure as heck didn't listen to it just to sit with my headphones snapping my fingers. :D

I was never much impressed by sexy album covers either, but they certainly aren't anything new.

Anybody remember how Tina Turner...err...addressed the microphone during the Gimme Shelter film?

Lady Gaga this album promotion stripped off completely nude at a gay club with fans videoing it and did a completely nude video in the name of art for someone else, yoga or something, right as she released her album. She calls it art, not shock value. The sad thing for her is no one cared. I think she thought there would be more attention and really barely a blip. That's been done years ago and nothing shocks anymore. I don't see a problem with using sex appeal for pop, sexy costumes, sexy music videos, album covers, but have the melodies and hooks and some catchy lyrics, in other words, great pop songs to back it up.

An interesting comparison from that article, given that imho Kate Bush had plenty of sex appeal early in her career.

I think it is a shame that the videos are so risque. Like the latest Nicki Minaj tune Anaconda. I get so wrapped up watching the booties shake that I forget about the great music that accompanies it.

What Chrissie is complaining about is the lack of truly timeless songs that today's pop stars have and the focus on their risque videos while Kate had the great songs all along to go with the sex appeal.

You can still be sexy and sing with suggestiveness, not huge dance numbers (not sing half the time with backing tapes like every pop star now) and get the effect. I think Beyonce is a great performer , but sometimes those in pop and R&B/pop should take note of performances like this. It's all the heavy use of backing tapes that is more depressing to me.

I agree that pop music from about the last decade has pushed the limits compared to when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's both in lyrical content and image. Controversy sells. A lot of our youth are getting mixed signals when it comes to stuff like this. It's all about money.

Chrissie is right. There was never any mindless pop based solely on sex appeal, slick marketing and crass commercialism before the current generation came along. Every artist before, say, Britney had only the very highest integrity and the very deepest pool of talent from which to draw. And sex was never a big part of rock or popular music until these kids came along.

That's not how it looked to me at all. According to the article, she's concerned about pop artists upping the exhibitionist angle. I read nothing from that about a problem with modern pop music itself.

And that's her opinion and I can understand her POV, but it's not like "sex sells" is a new thing. Madonna comes to mind, from thirty years ago. It's been that way as long as I can remember and I don't think it's going to change anytime soon.

Yeah, everyone knows we never had porn stars making pop music back in the 70s:

Nicki is so proud of her butt and boob implants that she spends a whole video focusing on it, but needs to give it up to Rihanna, who is at least all natural for her booty video extolling the perks of being a stripper (money) and her dancers are better.
