I'm listening to the Second as well:

This is a great rendition. I have not grown to love the Barbirolli yet, although I do love my first version - Paavo Jarvi on Telarc.

I have the Barbarolli and several other versions, but I am going to put on the 1957 Ormandy version of Sibelius Symphony No. 2 for tonight.

I hope you enjoy it. While this has been a critic favorite for a long time, it has always failed to move me. As do most of Muti’s recordings.

I prefer the already mentioned and superbly engineered Dutoit, OSM on Decca or Davis, RCO .

    Thanx for the advice!
I tend to trust RRB's recommendations as I have been happy with em so far. :righton:
Also the Muti got far better Amazon User Reviews than the Dutoit.
Which is surprising as I enjoy His rendition of Holst The Planets immensely!

Either way the Muti has gotta be way better than the Boulez!!

This Mravinsky 2CD set is THE definitive version of them all but especially the 6th. :edthumbs:

If you only need the 6th you may also try versions by Muti (I have his second recording pictured below, there's also an earlier one with Philharmonia) and Jansons, they are excellent, although not on par with the Mravinsky regarding the overall edge and power.

Plus, it's got excellent DSD sound--much, much better than any of the three previous releases. So it really is a bargain.

Don't forget that the forthcoming Bernstein Symphony Edition contains these complete Mahler symphonies (I'm not sure if it contains those bonus songs though) + some 48 (or so) additional CDs and costs only twise as much, if properly scored.

    Morning, Bronth (and all!)

Are you sure that they are the same performances and the same mastering?

For 18,99 I pulled the trigger on this mighty EMI box set of CHOPIN The BEST 100. If each of the CD's is as good as CD1 I am more than happy. 1 to 9 Stephen Kovacevich and Ingrid Fliter are world class, the only let down are the two waltzes played by Dimitri Alexeev. Dino Lipatti rescues the flow, while Daniel Barenboim and Cecile Oussev add one waltz each. Fine stuff with decent sound and flow...and that was just CD 1 - The Waltzes. Many more interesting piano players will follow.

    Morning, George!

The performances are the same, while mastering... it's a good question. I will probably pull the trigger on this set next month. It's kind of strange that Sony hasn't revealed any details, when the set is already being sold in some parts of Europe...

Just in case any of you've forgotten, there's also:

Munch understands the Gallic affect of brevity, many of the sounds produced by the BSO emerging with more snap than usual, and there's no languishing or mooning about when it's not appropriate. Sound and playing are excellent. While Munch's version might seem a tad lightweight in comparison to Muti, the Symphonie Fantastique should be a tad lightweight.

Similarity, Argenta's version with the Paris Conservatory Orchestra captures the sound of a French orchestra before being internationalized by jet-setting conductors and too much Bruckner and Mahler in the diet. Though there have been well intentioned attempts at HIPP Berlioz, somehow the Argenta PCO Fantastique is Hipper than any of 'em.

Now available in a big, cheap box that's worth getting anyway:

Looks like you have to send off to Australia to find a copy, after checking into Ebay. But it will set you back $35 for a 5 CD collection of red-hot performances in early Decca FFSS recordings.
