Thread number 20 for the Classical Music Corner.
Where is everybody?
At home playing one of the best recordings of Beethoven's Ninth.
Who else with F. Fricsay on that? Can't read the label well. Early 50's?
Beethoven's Ninth is a great choice for NYE (as is, in a somewhat different vein, "Die Fledermaus").
George, We are waiting for you to post the introduction/greetings to Thread #20 ...
That takes care of our fingers and toes. After one more, we won't be able to count any higher...
I am playing Korngold's masterpiece right now. Marvelous. What a composer!
I am curious about his string quartets, recorded for Chandos by the Doric SQ and released September 2010. Have you heard it? The British press received it with glowing reviews. Doric SQ is British as well as the label, of course.
Absolutely. We are looking to overtake the "Listening to vinyl", whatever thread number it is on right now ...
I finsihed ripping my HvK boxes while suffering through two NY football games last weekend. This weekend I'm going to start up Squeezebox, hit shuffle and see what pops up.
Masterpiece yes...my favorite recording of it..no. Not a big ASM fan.
What do people think of this set of Martucci orchestral works on Brilliant Classics?
Shuffle play doesn’t work as well with classical for me. But I like the spirit!
And having them at such easy reach makes for a quick and easy selection in the future.
OK, we'll just do whatever they do...
Next up (just arrived today):
I have the complete Beethoven SQ's by this ensemble ...
Thanks or the link. I agree that it sounds nice. A live performance by Kempff of that one is lovely - it's on BBC Legends.
Just a reminder, this thread (and the 19 that have preceded it) is for all things that relate to Classical Music. Post what you're listening to, what recordings you recommend, recent purchases, concerts, discuss works, composers, etc.
Also, beginners are welcome. Feel free to post any questions that you may have. This includes requests for recommendations for particular works/composers, etc.
Much thanks to all who have made this such and enjoyable and informative experience.
Thank you, George.
My pleasure, Jay!
Now playing CD1 from this set, which arrived a few weeks ago from across the pond for a first listen ...
Listening to this CD I picked up today. I have waited a long time to get a chance to hear Ms. Long's Faure so I am very excited.
I got a bunch more CDs (will post them all later), including the OOP Chopin Scherzi by Moravec. It's in excellent condition overall, just a few wrinkles in the booklet cover. I plan to sell it, as I already have a copy. Here's the info on it:
PM me if interested.
PM on the way.
I have that set with a different packaging. I like the performances, but I'm not crazy about the SQ.
