I couldn't begin to count how many Philips CDs I have. When I began collecting classical around 1974, Philips was turning out the best vinyl around. No warps, no ticks, no pops, standard rep, first-rate artists, excellent sound.

So, when I began switching to CDs, I had developed a fondness for Philips artists like Haitink, Colin Davis, Arrau, the Beaux Arts Trio et. al. Then they came up with the Duo series, some of the best bargains around. So, I really mourn the demise of this wonderful label.

Absolutely. They were experts at recording the piano as well.

It's funny [or something], but after getting the Scott 299b Integrated Tube amp, the audible surface noise level of all my LPs dropped with no apperant loss of high frequencies or dynamics. If anything the superior phono stage in this classic amp has greater dynamics. Even something as horribly mastered as the Time-Life Beethoven Bicentennial edition is starting to show signs of life. I was just about to give up on Lps.

Wasn't Symphony No. 7 Op. 92 arranged for wind octet by the composer?

  6. Couldn't find a pic of the original CD, the below is the re-issue.

Vinyl is much more equipment dependent than digital sources.

I know I'm a day late (but after all, I'm in a different time zone ), but I would like to mention Ernest Bloch (1880 – 1959). I once stumbled across his suite "Baal Shem (3 Pictures of Chassidic Life)" and was deeply moved by the music. I got this CD

and listen to it from time to time. There is some beautiful music on that CD, but especially "Baal Shem" never ceases to move me.

I wonder if you guys know Ernest Bloch (not to be confused with the German philosopher Ernst Bloch)? Maybe he's a houshold name among classical buffs and it's only me thinking he's kind of obscure.

emphasis on "were". now they are slammed all the time, and I have to turn down my amps when Philips comes on.

George, are you familiar with this recording since you are so knowledgeable about most recordings by Richter?

I jump in: this triple is a total failure. The artists hated it. It was launched as the meeting of the giants, the dream team etc. It was my first meeting with this work and hated it due to this recording. But after I listened to the legendary DG with Fricsay/Anda et al. things changed.

Of course the Brahms double is one of the best ever.

Yep, that is the one to get: Anda, Schneiderhan, Fournier; Fricsay/Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra.

I have a good number of versions of Chopin Nocturnes but none can top Moravec's, though the version by Arrau comes close ...
