    OK, thanks.

I have not heard the pre 60s HvK recordings, but I much prefer his 60s recordings to his later ones. They seem more raw, less polished to me.

Then you should try the 50s recordings, they probably are his best.

Karajan recorded for both EMI and DG since the early days of his career with the BPO going back to the mid 1950's.

Now playing this CD, which should have arrived before Christmas from MDT but had not, for a first listen since waiting for 11 months is not an option ...

Thanks for your opinion. I think I'm going to get a couple of Pleyel discs I've been considering. Apparently, not many others are familiar with his music.

Tonight I'm listening to a wonderful Linn Records SACD:

Linn Records SACD of William Carter, classical guitar playing Fernando Sor, Early Works. This is an absolutely exquisite album of Sor's lesser known but hauntingly beautiful guitar works. Carter re-learned his technique to play the guitar with his fingertips in the style of Sor, not the fingernails as is played by contemporary guitarists, including Segovia, and this finger pad technique lends a delicacy, harmonic nuance and broader instrumental color than the modern technique of using the nails to play the strings. Repeated listening rewards one with the revelation of a incomparably beautiful set of guitar arrangements that are quite unlike anything you've ever heard before. Recommended for anyone who has even a remote interest in classical guitar. Astonishingly beautiful.

By the way, the all of the recordings from Linn Records are superb...and a fair amount of their content is available as 24/192 Khz downloads.

    Now playing....

My imprint "Mathis", a favorite work since 1965 when it was assigned listening.

    Hindemith
    Symphony "Mathis der Maler"

    Philadelphia Orchestra
    Eugene Ormandy
    Hindemith
Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber
    and
    William Walton
Variations on a Theme by Hindemith

    Cleveland Orchestra
    George Szell

This Mathis was recorded less than two years before Hindemith's death.
IIRC, the Ormandy recording was the only one listed in the Schwann Catalog for a long time. It looked like this:

    Does that bring back memories!

I learned most of the stuff on that album. My teacher forced me to use a non nail technique also. I probably would have a tough time with those pieces now.

Probably, it has pretty nice sonics. What's about the interpretation? I think I should compose my custom set of best Bruckner symphonies sooner or later...

A very good 7th but the top of the list goes to Wand/BPO IMO. 933316.jpg

Does anyone know anything about this recording:

Some of the Amazon reviewers claim that the orchestra is out of tune here, which seems strange to me...

It was only my first listen, but I didn't like it. It may just be the Br7 I don't like, or don't like yet; it's not familiar. I've moved on to HvK's rendition. The first movement kind of meanders. But I think it's supposed to. Before I liked classical, I used to carpool with a woman who played the local classical station on her car radio. Most orchestral music seemed to wander like this Bruckner 7. I didn't much care for it.

And just as I finish typing that, it picks up a little--not quite a march, but more than butterflies in a meadow.

    Now it's a little Wagner-y (10:30).

I still have Furtwangler and Bohm to listen to.

Too many better choices for cheaper. If you can get for less than a buck then it is worth it. I may have been a little harsh on my description.

It was 75 cents. But shipping it all the way here pushes the price up quite a bit.
