I'm a late comer to the Prokofiev PC3. A fabulous piece! And this is the disc that introduced me to it, which I assume is the same recording as your DG "Originals", correct?

    Stoli of course. :)

BTW, love the avatar. Urbie Green was a boyhood hero of mine. "Mr. Velvet" of the upper register!

That's the pairing I have. I have the Ravel works on this disc. They are worth getting as well.

I think I mentioned once that I came to the Prokofiev third in an unusual manner - it is the work Amy Irving plays in the film "The Competition." (Richard Dreyfuss plays "The Emperor.")

Way back when, Harry Pearson recommended the Hungaraton for its sound quality. I bought it, agreed the sound was excellent and found the music pleasant. A few years ago I got an additional set (on original instruments) as part of a Brilliant box set of Vivaldi Concerti, and it is much better.

I saw that movie many moons ago, and since I was much less familiar with the music involved, I enjoyed it much less then than I would now. I will check that one out again soon, and thanks.

Wow! Nobody can give me a suggestion.

Any suggestions for something like this

except on SACD and surround. Some kind of a best of or greatest hits of Classical tunes non Classical listeners would know like the 1812 overture.

I'm not aware of any. The closest I can think of are some of the RCA Living Stereo SACDs that contain popular works (e.g. the Fiedler/Boston Pops discs and "Vienna" by Reiner), but those are three-channel at most.

Yes it is the same recording. It has been released in few incarnations.

Amazing playing on that one. She and a couple other pianists own that one. Amazing composition. The ways the piano utilizes the thematic material is brilliant.

She does a great job with the Ravel stuff also but not my top choice.

    Top choices:

    Gaspard - Ivo P.
    Concerto- Who else but......ABM.

    OK, you're crazy. :)

Seriously, it's a good deal - so if it's music that you'd like to have, ya might as well take advantage of it.

  17. I have some of it already but the completist in me just couldn't stand having 2/3 of the series. Should arrive here on Monday. What I like about Presto is that their UK deliveries have a flat fee of $7 for courier deliver, no matter how much you buy, might as well make it count. :)

I just ordered a bunch myself from them (including two Karajan sets at 30% off), extremely reasonable prices including shipping to New Zealand.

Those who are not in the UK and want these lovely RCA boxes badly: you may check Grooves-Inc - they sell most of them at the same or slightly better prices with free shipping (I usually use grooves-inc.de and all orders starting from 20 euros qualify for free shipping worldwide).

Guys, I have a midnight hi-rez question for you. There are about 7 SACDs with Alpensinfonie, which one do you recommend as the best (of course, both performance- and sound-wise)? Merci!

Thanks for mentioning Grooves, for some reason I never got in the habit of ordering from them. I will be more inclined to after reading your good recommendation.

I almost did the same thing and ordered every Sony box! I ordered most of them and will probably get them all. I've really been enjoying the Prokofiev box and many others lately.

I have ordered from Presto many times with zero issues. I just received a bill from customs for $15 from my last order. I'll have to contact Presto but it was a shock to suddenly receive this after many orders. Anybody out there ever get a bill from customs??

Oh, also thanks to whoever posted regarding the Messiaen-Turangalila Symphony Naxos discs. Those discs are favorites of mine that I hadn't played in a while. I just played them yesterday and had to hear it all again today. I hear something new every time I play these.

I also played some of the Villa-Lobos String Quartets today and they really hit the spot. I have the Brilliant box. This is on sale at Presto now for under $10, I think. I can't think of a better way to spend ten bucks. Six fantastic cd's of very well regarded String Quartets. I paid $15 and thought it was a steal. One of my favorite fairly recent purchases and music that I would not want to be without.

I have had a problem with ordering from Grooves-Inc only once and that obviously wasn't their fault: a packet with 1 CD and 1 DVD-A got lost in the last January during the infamous European "snow collapse" when the whole situation was totally out of control of the sellers.

Some other guys in this thread reported the same problem with the otherwise rock solid British e-tailers (MDT or Presto or both). AFAIK, all of them, including myself, were finally re-sent lost packages in a more or less timely fashion.

These shops have very friendly customer services, at least Grooves certainly do have. :righton:

BTW, currently Grooves are celebrating their 20th Anniversary and they are offering free worldwide shipping for all orders (the offer is valid for 20 days).
