Too often it's all about the dollar, history be damned. At least we have a sonic document of the place. Sony's SBM mastering reveals very good non-dated sound.

The Broadwood ballroom was big enough to produce some acoustics, but surely Ormandy and company didn't give concerts there?

Now playing CD16, the last CD from the following set for a first listen. I am now ready for another Bach Complete Organ Works set. This set is excellent ... :righton:

For the record, this is the World Premiere recording of the 1st VC and was recorded on Jan 2, 56 while the live recording of the previous day concert on Jan 1, 56 (Oiatrach performed Mozart's VC no 5 in this concert as well) was included in the big NYPO Broadcasts Boxed set released 10 years ago. The first American performance took place on Dec 29, 55 by the same team. Its World premiere happened in Leningrad on Oct 29, 55 with D Oistrach and Mravinsky, and recorded by the same team in USSR a year later on Nov 30, 56.

Thanks for that. She was a real pioneer. It's easy to forget how marginal Mahler's music was to the public in the fifties and sixties.

And welcome to the Classical Music Corner. No need to lurk. If you have time, read some of the old threads. There's a wealth of information and entertainment in them. Thread #3 is particularly rich, I think.

Thanks John S (and all here)! I've really only just begun my journey into the classical realm so there's a lot for me to learn, but these threads have been a great resource for me. I just got such a buzz out of what I read regarding Isabella Wallich I decided to share here. As it happens, I decided to order her book. If there are any good anecdotes I'll report back (without spoiling anything for those who want to read it for themselves). Cheers!

I don't know, good question. That Web site was ambiguous, almost suggesting they did. During that era the orchestra's regular home was the Academy of Music, a beautiful old opera house that is still standing, but was long considered acoustically difficult for orchestra performances.

I am also reading this stuff now...I found myself ignorant about the middle ages, being always consumed with Greece, Rome, and earlier history.

    Yeah I found em....Alpha's average about $15 + Used.
Unless something is RARE or OOP I don't tend to drop that much on one CD.
$5-$10 shipped is what I generally spend for one ULN.

The grade ULN is sometimes misused. I was not impressed with the last and only A4 CD I bought used - Miracles of Sant'iago. The CD has a few not insignificant scratches, though it played okay but I ripped it to my desktop real quick ...

Once in a great while I get one that way also.
One outta every dozen or so I buy....pisses me off!! :realmad:
I'm real anal about my CD's....I want em like new PERIOD.
I have CD's from 1986 when CD first came out that are still like new.
Really bugs me that some people don't take care of their CD's.
My music is like gold to me esp the RARE and OOP's I have that are worth a few bux.
That's how they are valuable cuz they were taken care of.
