I am enjoying my recent purchase of Rimsky-Korsakov's Orchestral Suites from 4 operas recorded in 2011 for Naxos. Gerard Schwarz, Seattle Symphony. 8.572787

The Cortege from Mlada is thrilling. I don't know how this disc might compare to other recordings, not having collected these suites.

Just posting to be able to find this thread later!

  6. I totally agree: this is the best set of Rimsky-Korsakov Suites recorded on CD to date.
I would easily consider this CD Box set as a "audiophile" reference recording, to "show off your system".
It is also a great CD box set showcasing a great Russian Composer!

I know he was there in the mid 80's.

Oops - someone beat me to it. He was also directing Mostly Mozart Orchestra and the New York Chamber Symphony (a/k/a the Y Chamber Orchestra) at the time.

Didn't he run the Mostly Mozart Program at Lincoln Center at some point. I went for a few of those concerts - strangely enough, one of the concerts was by the I Solisti Veneti and Claudio Scimoni - an all baroque program.

Now playing the first Trio Sonata for Organ by J. S. Bach from a great big box of Helmut Walcha on Archiv LPs. Wonderfully idiomatic, well recorded.

So you say you're not sleepy yet. Do you wish to hear another?

Sonically, RCA Living Stereo recording destroys the competition. The Reiner/Chicago recordings were flat-out sonic miracles. That SACD series from BMG is about as good as it gets in SACD transfers. Our host has said as much. There's something about this particular sound, you can't find it anywhere else. And the SACDs are remarkably good. I've owned good copies of the originals, the SACDs are all that.

Even though you have a copy of this recording. Why is this not your favorite "version". What is your favorite version?

I have a combination of 15 copies of Scherasde on LP and CD. I actually like them all. Reason, I like each conductor and Orchestra and recording engineer
    and Producer.
