Getting a new blind comparison ready for the forum. I am going to do it very differently this time in hopes of fostering more discussion of the various interpretations.

I posted this in the prior thread, but right before we ended. I think it's important enough to post again:

First Symphony is pretty good in that series
    Third Symphony is very good

Second Symphony is one of the best on record IMO.

I don't know if you've considered it yourself, but might it attract more participants if you just added it to this thread, with of course plenty of reminders that the competition is still going? It doesn't really need a poll because you can just check your inbox and the progress of this thread to monitor how many have taken part; and then you can remind them just before the deadline what date and time the comparison closes, so if anyone submits their votes after that, they won't be accepted.

I was wondering whether you'd do another of them; they've been a great addition to this forum.

    BTW, what's going on?!

I tuned out only this morning and I think we were on posts 920-40 of thread #38 - now we are already on the new one! Is this thread normally this active on a Sunday at this time of year?

I think the original idea for a separate thread was to attract non-CMC contributors. This was moderately successful. On the other hand, keeping these very interesting excercises "in house" means that these blind tests don't fall into obscurity. I think that's a very powerful argument for keeping them here. Plus maybe then George and Stuart among others would participate. :);)

I don't want the blind comparisons to get in the way of this thread. The subject is similar but the threads are distinctly different. I think all my multiple notices on this thread is as far as I want to go.

I certainly am not going to have a poll on the next one. the big change that I am bringing as an experiment is to eliminate the ranking all together and establish a format that is all about discussion about the artistic choices and technical merits of each performance. It's art not a contest so I think if I can steer the blind comparisons in that direction it will be better. But I still want to use bias controls in such a way that everyone who jumps in will offer up initial impressions that are not influenced. Then if the format works we will have a great starting point for interesting discourses. Hopefully it will work as a multistage process that will be fun and interesting and maybe... enlightening.

It's an experiment. Let's see how it goes. Should be up some time soon.

I think that is wise. I suspect that there are those who only wish to participate in your blind listening sessions and would find it cumbersome to follow it in this thread, amongst all the other discussions.
