Finally got around to comparing them. I dislike both. Quite a bit actually. But I would pick the one that actually won.

Just picked up a copy from the HMV on Oxford Street in London. They are on clearance at 30 pounds. After my VAT rebate the box should run me about $40.

On Robin's point, about half the discs pre-date the 70's. It seems a rather nice selection to me.

On a related note, I was walking down Oxford Street looking for the HMV. I had a general recollection of where it was from several years ago, but I could not find t. I finally asked and someone pointed out. It had moved - into much smaller quarters. It is a shell of its former self. A shame.

I think that the fifth symphony is a real masterpiece

Bychkov's Nutcracker/BPO is nothing short of extraordinary.........it's hard for me to decide between Montreal/Dutoit and his anymore
Maybe slightly more color in the Dutoit with the St. Eustasche bloom, and more clinical Russian expertise with the Bychkov

There's also a very fine Bizet disc with him on Phillips.

I think you mean Philips, the Dutch label. Phillips was a totally different label from the U.S. People keep confusing the two :)

I have Bychkov's Shostakovich No. 11 from 2006. If I remember correctly, someone wrote a admiring review.

Seeing this reminded me to give this a listen for the first time in, oh, 15 years or so...

The Dutch Philips label (spelt with 1 l) was founded in 1950 as part of the Philips company and released mainly (though not only) classical records. The American Phillips label (spelt with 2x l) was founded by Sam Phillips, owner of the famous Sun label people like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis made their first records for.

I remember the cover. My dad had it. I've mentioned before that peformance of the allegretto was my classical music epitome.

There were a few great records on Phillips International, like "Lonely Weekends" by Charlie Rich. If Sam Phillips recorded any classical music I am not aware of it.
