Misery of the ages! Karajan was multi-lingual but Russian is not a language most conductors can speak unless he is Russian. I think many of the Russian piano greats - Richter, Gilels spoke English and perhaps Berman did as well ...

Need to dust off the following box from the shelf and give the CD's a spin. This box features Gidon Kremer and Martha ...:righton:

Like I said, not on the occasion that I met him, which was around 1980 or so. Richter complained in an interview about the "awful" English that Americans speak, so I presume that he did. Not sure about Gilels. I would think that most international musicians could speak English to some degree.

Any time I hit my usual used vinyl haunts and thrift stores, I look for tube equipment because I'd buy it on the spot...but so far, nothing yet. My area is not very metropolitan, so it may take a while :)

Maybe the photographer just instructed Berman to say "wallah wallah wallah" and Karajan to look interested :)

I have a few of Blanchard's recordings on Nonesuch but this one is still on my wantlist. You don't find Nonesuch very often here in Europe. And I've never even seen the French originals.

I bought this in a used record store about 25 years ago.

If I ever see another one I'll let you know. :)

I talked to him backstage in 1993, 1994 and a year before he died. He talked by by then some English and German. He was living for years in Florence.

I assume you are talking about Berman, as I read he spent the last part of his life in Italy IIRC ...

In addition to my box set of all of those, I have Nos. 20 and 27 on SACD. I think that is the only pairing issued in that format.

I have the Leonhardt, and the entire Janowski "Ring" packaged as a Sony budget set. What do the highlights consist of?
