Instead of coming back to Europe, if he only had went to the U.S. and worked with some of the Big Five orchestras and Mercury or RCA recording team...

I doubt it, he died in 1956 and at the time most recordings were made in mono only.

    Yes. I do.

Never gave up. Bought first CD player only in the 90's. Slight disappointment due to certain harshness & stringency. Bought after few dedicated Cd player experiments - because I believed that no CD player can sound fine - a Marantz universal player (DV 8300, still in use) that turned out to be boring, bland, even metallic sounding with CD's (DVD-Audios and SACD were slightly better, I believed). Bought a dedicated SACD player (the T+A) and appreciated tubed Vincent CD player. Now living in one town only, therefore less gear. (Somehow I miss the Vincent, sonically exuberant though a bit bassy but with classical it just had the balls, and it had headphone connection.) Now I have acceptable digi dept. with a proper SACD player and Hegel's DAC with 4 inputs; among other things, I can listen DVD-audios so that Marantz reads them & feeds the DAC with 24/96 stream. But I still get a kick while listening LP's. Provided they're in acceptable condition...

Found this set among my archive of 45 rpm discs....complete recording of the actual broadcast in Feb. 1946 of La Boheme conducted by Arturo Toscanini...featured on 9 discs and a 91 page booklet which includes the libretto of the opera. I have the cd version of these recordings...fun to listen to Arturo sing along with Jan Peerce in the first act aria "Che gelida manina"

And the set of Brahms symphonies featuring the Dresden Staatskapelle directed by Sanderling is one of the best. I'm curious about the sound quality of that blu-spec CD of Brahms 4th.

On 5 March 1942, 73 years ago to the day, this piece had its World première:

"The world première was held in Kuibyshev on 5 March 1942. The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, conducted by Samuil Samosud, gave a rousing performance that was broadcast across the Soviet Union and later in the West as well. The Moscow première took place on 29 March 1942 in the Columned Hall of the House of Unions, by a joined orchestra of the Bolshoi Orchestra and the All-Union Radio Orchestra."
