It's an earlier set and it's in mono (obviously borrowed from long OOP rather silent American vinyls). It's considered a better and livelier choice. The only supposed advantage of the later, 70's cycle, is Parker/Bishop craftsmanship.

  2. It's as well Solti with the VPO.

Starting with “Das Rheingold” in 1958, followed by “Siegfried” (1962), “Götterdämmerung” (1964), and finally “Die Walküre” (1965), Decca spent a total of 8 years in the studio working to produce the complete collection of the musical drama “Der Ring des Nibelungen”. This grand undertaking was more than just the first full recording of this work. It was also the birth of a timeless masterpiece that has seen neither its value nor enchantment diminish in the 45 years since its completion and initial release.

The ensemble for this recording is nothing short of spectacular. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Georg Solti, who was in his forties at this time, the preeminent Wagner vocalists of the 20th, and acclaimed producer and “avid” Wagnerian John Culshaw, were all brought together to perform this masterpiece. Together they produced a recording full of passion and purpose. This complete collection is the single greatest recording of the “Ring”, allowing listeners to experience the glorious sound of the concert hall in their own home.

    Did you like Pollini's Nocturnes?

IIRC, I read in Richard Osborne's Karajan Biography that John Culshaw worked closely with Karajan on many of the recordings Karajan made for Decca as well.

Quite often, the best conducting from a conductor came in their 40's, when they were still energetic and before some form of senility set in ...

I haven't decided yet, as it's not the way I usually like my Nocturnes. I instantly loved his Chopin Etudes but I doubted that I would like much of his other Chopin recordings. I found a cheap copy of his Nocturnes and decided to give them a try. I'll see if I can revisit them soon and get back to you.

+1. There are some exceptions which still prove the rule.

I do have the disc, Robin, but not the SACD version. Something else to consider... BTW, which version of Book 5 do you have?

Check them out at the link below. MDT is based in UK and it offers excellent prices on many classical CD's. I was able to get the Harnoncourt 60-CD Complete Bach Cantatas set for about $120 early this year while the going price stateside is about $500 these days.

Thanks - I've never dealt with them, so it's good to have a recommendation.

Anyone got this disc: If so, worth getting?

Original Astree CD issue—E 7708, from 1987. Also have Book One, E 7769 1989. My copy of Savall's first recording of book Four is the Astree/Naive reissue, ES 9932—sounds noticeably better than the first CD issue though not as good as the Astree vinyl. Used to Have the Astree box with all five books. My stupidest move in the realm of the French Baroque was selling the complete François Couperin - Blandine Verlet set. That's something I really miss and naturally I never seen it again.

Jay, I heard the Philips label may be going away. It may be due to the fact DG, London and Philips used to be part of Polygram, a former wholly owned subsidiary of Philips, the Dutch electronic giant. But Polygram no longer exists since it became part of UniversalMusic and none of these labels have anything to do with Philips, the electronic company. I will miss the Philips label for sure ...

Quite strangely, I haven't heard any of his work yet. Once I decided to plug the trigger and get his Beethoven's 9th, but at the same moment it appeared on super expensive Japan SACD (or complete set), so I re-decided to wait a bit, who knows, maybe there will be more affordable SACD re-edition as well.

Can you name some of his other best works (I know, he is well regarded for Brahms too)?

I only have his RCA Beethoven symphony set, but it's the best that I have heard. He was 74 when he recorded it.

  22. There used to be a nice box set with all 9 symphonies on CD, I passed on it back then - wish I had it now.

I don't know, but the availability of Gunter Wand's recordings appears to be somewhat spotty when I last searched on Amazon. I don't believe I saw any Beethoven Cycle listed. He was not a high-profile German conductor like Karajan and he was with a regional orchestra. But then the BPO overshadows most other German ensembles anyway ...
