Lovely stuff, like all of Savall's recordings of French Baroque. My favorite Savall recording of François Couperin is his version of Les Nations:

There's also an amazing set of late viol suites by Couperin Le Grand that Savall recorded for Astree, E 7744. Naturally it's long OOP. Very dark, emotional music.

Was that Gunter Wand's Beethoven set issued on RCA? RCA/BMG has merged with Sony Music, IIRC. That combo is late the re-issue party. I would think the set may be remastered and re-issued sometimes in the future ...

Ah, I see it's two discs. Contains everything on the Astree except Marche, IV.83, which is no big deal since it contains so many other pieces from "Etranger." Just ordered it.

It has been remastered already, even twice: there are mid-priced CDs (24 bit/96 kHz mastering) and aforementioned Japanese SACDs.

Edit: here are the newest complete set (separates are also available and look the same), the previous separate edition of the 9th and the SACD set from Esoteric.

Thanks for the heads up. It has been months since I last checked for Gunter Wand's recordings. So it looks like RCA/BMG/Sony has been cranking up that re-issue machine. DG and EMI have been at this game for the past two years, probably in response to the lousy economy and they needed the cashflows rather than high profit margins ...

Set you back $220. I've got Celi's EMI set. :pineapple:

I will not fork over $220 for the Gunter Wand's Bruckner set for sure. I remember that the asking price for that Karajan Bruckner set was right up there as well. Then that 38-CD Karajan Symphony Edition mega box set - both of us bought from Amazon UK - hit the market ...

  10. That's the one, maybe I can pick it up cheap one of these days.

Keep an eye on e-tailers in your backyard, though not necessarily Amazon UK. I bought this set at MDT for around $34 and it costs close to $50 in the States ...

It's strange that many sellers on eBay can not approve your 'maybe' as the fact of reality one of these days. Such disharmony sucks. :D But search is our friend (and enemy of enemies of our wallets).

    Good point. :righton:

Although Karajan's Bruckner can't touch the deep spiritual readings found in Celi's EMI set. :agree:

How does it compare to Van Karajan's version of Beethoven's 9 Symphonies on Deutsche Grammophon?

There are three such sets, from the '60s, '70s, and '80s. Which one do you have?

Davis' Beethoven is very on sale at mdt.co.uk: http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//4756883.htm The shipping for box sets is usually 4.5 GBP.

Colin Davis is one of the greatest symphonic conductors the UK has ever produced. I think I have heard him conducting one of the Beethoven symphonies with the BBC Symphony and that was quite good IIRC. I have to let you know once I have had chance to listen to this Philips set. It is now in transit from the UK to the US ...

I don't think Colin Davis goes for that extreme legato like Karajan did in the second half of his conducting career.

I sold one set during the '80s or '90s. I can't remember which. Bruckner's never really been big with me.

If you include the EMI set by Karajan from 55, there are four. I think the 77 version is the worst, as it projects little energy.

I have not, perhaps George has. Jay, have you tried sampling the music on Amazon? I bought a few CD's based on what I heard from the samples and am quite happy with the purchase decisions made that way ...

I haven't either. My favorite for those works remains the Trio di Trieste, from their DG Original Masters Box.

All I know of the Wanderer trio is that their Shostakovich was very well reviewed and a few folks over at GMG really liked it.

I read in Karajan's biography by Richard Osborne in which Karajan explained why he did not record either Mahler or Bruckner when he was younger. The answer was he felt that music by Mahler and Bruckner could best be appreciated by older folks. Lo and behold, I am just starting to appreciate Mahler music but on balance, I still like Bruckner symphonies more. I also did not get into Bruckner music until about three years ago ...
