I chose that because it was the best quality image I could find of the labels in order to provide the track listing. The back cover would have been too small to read.

So Warner Records can't use the original name on the label, but I would think they would be able to list the original issue in the liner notes. At least I wish they could and would.

I know you later agreed it was Abravanel; but I suspect you were thinking of Varujan Kojian, who was conductor 1979-83 until he was essentially run out of town because of "a dalliance between Kojian and a Mormon missionary".

Roussel's symphonies are significantly under-programmed and underperformed imo.

Listening on ClassicsOnline. It's shutting down on 1/31. It was going to offer a more streamlined selection of Naxos owned titles after scaling back on 12/1/2016, but I guess not. There is only a little blurb on the bottom of their web player, but no other information.

Too bad, I enjoy lossless classical streaming.

I'm going to do as much exploring as I can on ClassicsOnline before 1/31.

Ludwig Thuille was a friend of Richard Strauss.

I second that. The four etudes are the highlight of the set.

How does Christa Ludwig compare with Elly Ameling? IMO, Elly Ameling had an extraordinarily sweet voice ... :agree:

Big difference No. 1.....Ameling was a soprano and Ludwig a mezzo -soprano. Of course they sang many of the same Lieder by Brahms, Schubert, Strauss etc.
To me they are very different in their technique, so much that Ludwig was an overall 'broad spectrum' singer ( she sang Mozart operas as well as for instance Wagner ). Ameling did not, specializing mostly in concerts/recitals.
