I recently picked up the following Goldberg on harpsichord by Mahan Esfahani, and it also has a fantastic rich sound.
I just finished listening to the Byron Janis Liszt Piano Concertos CD on Mercury Living Presence for the second time. What an excellent recording from 1962 I believe. One of the better sounding discs in my collection and excellent playing too!
I posted a separate thread about this set a while ago, asking for advice, but got only one reaction: Toscanini's 1939 Beethoven cycle - which set to get? Maybe someone here can say something about it.
Very few of these pieces have been attempted on the guitar before this ground-breaking release in 1993. Very good playing and sound.
I received this Mahler Symphony 1 mono CD by Bruno Walter in the mail today. Unfortunately when I opened the package the CD appeared to be some sort of cheap manufactured on demand copy, probably a CD-R! I have heard of these but never seen one in person. I didn't even bother to open the CD when I saw the cheaply printed cover art and Archive Music logo, I immediately sent it back to Amazon for a refund. They didn't specify that this was not a real original pressing, and I paid top dollar for it so wasn't willing to accept it.
Robin de Raaff is a new name to me. His style is hard to pin down--some parts remind me more recent Penderecki, others a bit of Schoenberg, still others very fragmented and pointillistic. The sound varies a bit among the pieces, but it is never less than very good. Pieces include his Cello Concerto, the title track, and Symphony No.3.
Yes, ArkivCD is a CD-R. I've had mostly good experiences with them, but you should have been told what you were getting! It shouldn't be hard to find a pressed CD of this one.
Listening to Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 from the following 1978 box set: Kempff/Leitner, 1962 stereo recording
I love the cover art! Seeing your pictures makes me wish that I collected vinyl instead of CDs sometimes!
