Finally found an inexpensive used copy of this OOP box. Apparently, CD 6 is defective on some copies, with the last 8 1/2 minutes of disc 6 skipping repeatedly, so finding a non-defective one for a good price was particularly difficult. It was well worth the effort. I'm now enjoying his lovely performance of the Mendelssohn concerto in e minor. I normally don't like the sound of the violin, but Grumiaux playing always sounds exquisitely beautiful. In addition to the emionr, this box includes the d minor concerto by Mendelssohn, along with works by Bruch, Schubert, Wieniawski, Tchaikovsky, Michael Haydn, Vivaldi, Bach and Handel.
Hmm. I should check out CD6 as I bought this box shortly after it became available. IIRC, I did not experience the repeated skipping ... This box is fabulous IMO.
After having received these Naxos Historical CD's from MDT over a month ago ... Now playing the following CD, restored by MOT for a first listen. That stupid WMP is showing the tracks in Japanese for some reasons.
Interesting...Pentatone released a number of these recordings on SACD, along with some other recordings that don't seem to be in this box but were taken from Philips masters, for instance these.
I have this also and really love the Franck Symphony but haven't warmed up to Stravinsky yet. I read recently that the Franck was one of the favorite pieces of the writer Charles Bukowski.
Now playing CD7, the last CD - Rehearsal excerpts from Symphonies Nos. 4, 5, 7 & 9 from the following box for a first listen ... It is so cool to hear Walter prodding the orchestra at the rehearsals ... This box has become one of my favorite Beethoven Symphonies cycles.
In my opinion there is no finer conductor than Walter. Several others reach his level of insight and musicality, but not very many. His interpretations are always at least interesting and often inspiring.
