    Anyone know why this happens?

The CD has absolutely no marks or discolorations on both sides, yet it won't play on my Yamaha CD player. It plays fine on my Laptop drive. Also plays fine on my portable SONY player.

When I put it in my Yamaha, it spins around, isn't read and then the player opens automatically. This has never happened to me before with any other CD. Any ideas?

    :help:

What CD is it? Catalog#, title, artist, label. Year/model of Yamaha player.

  3. Is the Yamaha playing other music CDs?

I notice now that CD 2 does NOT have the RE-1 (Matrix for CD 2 is 3 200-2.2 SRC+11)

Yes, I can't recall it ever not being able to play a CD. It's probably about 4 years old. I've played thousands of CDs and CD-Rs on it.

1987 cd release of Grafitti - lucky to have that! :)

Could be CD rot setting in, affecting playback on the Yamaha first.

Thanks. Wouldn't I be able to see it, though?

Not always. Can start on molecular level.

I have opposite situation: 2012 Justin Bieber CD that will not open on PC - actually crashes iTunes and Windows Media Player, but plays fine on all CD players, old and new.

My suspicion: DRM restrictions so songs cannot be ripped onto hard-drive from it.

Can you try copying the CD, and see if the Yamaha can play the copy?

I can try, but I have a second copy I can listen to. It's more I wanted to understand how this can happen, as it hasn't happened to me before.

Did the Yamaha ever play this disc? I know it's an old disc but I thought perhaps it was new to you....

Did you try cleaning the disc?

    Ok, thanks.

On my set, if one CD has a RE-1 in the matrix and the other doesn't, does that mean the two CDs come from two different sets?

I think it did. It at least played on my prior Yamaha CD player (very similar, only older model) It's hard to say if I've played it on my current player, as I usually listen to my Japan pressing, but tonight wanted to compare the USA disc and discovered this problem.

Don't know. Just check if both discs have catalog numbers that appear on the outside of the jewel case. Then they are part of that release.

I did have a new DVD that was exhibiting some random playback issues.. Cleaned it and it worked fine; this was a brand new disc with no apparent visible flaws.

I did clean my disc and it did not fix the problem.

Actually, what it did do was make me very glad I pick up backup copies when I can. I'll need to find another PG backup now.

Now, the question is, why do you have a Justin Bieber cd? ;)

My PC refuses to play Justin Bieber CD's. I have to give it the three finger salute and restart.

I remember back in the early 90's my Yamaha CD player developed a similar symptom, not reading certain CD's and then repeating on some. I tried everything, cleaning the lens, cleaning/lubing the laser carriage, and dry lubing the clamping plate/disc that appeared to be worn. Shortly after the laser burned out, so that was that!

Your player has excellent reviews, mostly for its convenience features and fast CD access. My suggestion is to upgrade to a player with a better converter (24/96 or 24/192) perhaps a Marantz or NAD that will outperform the Yamaha by a mile!

Thanks! I hope the laser does not burn out. Actually, I think I have only had it 6 years at the most.

Twofold - Diverse audience, and secondly to demonstrate loudness mastering. ;) It's louder than Thriller or even my Rush CDs.
