Sorry if this was discussed already, but I just realized J&E Coen are writing a Scarface screenplay. Instead of a Cuban immigrant in Miami (e.g., Pacino/De Palma version), it would reboot as a Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles with Diego Luna possibly playing lead. Although the Coens are probably my favorite filmmakers and gangster is my favorite genre, I never warmed up to Miller's Crossing. But that was 27 years ago and the Coens have matured since then. Due next year, according to IMDB.

That's one of the funniest understatements I have ever read!!!!

That does sound like a good remake. I loved what they did with True Grit.

Speaking of Howard Hughes's Sarface. I would really like see a Cohen take on Hughes involving himself in Hollywood. I think that could be great Cohen material, and a little more down-to-earth than The Aviator.

Does remaking Scarface mean remaking "Scarface" (1932) or "Scareface/The Treasure Of the Sierra Madre" (1982)

I'd prefer a Lebowski sequel. Or prequel. Or a film about Walter's platoon in Vietnam (the joke could be that he was in the typing pool during the entire war)

Yep, me too. Miller's Crossing sealed the deal with me for the Coen Brothers.

Miller's Crossing is my favorite film of the 1990s, so I warmly welcome them back to the genre. :)

Miller's Crossing is great as a standalone, but it's even more interesting if you're familiar with Dashiel Hammet's Red Harvest, which seems to have been its inspiration. Same goes for Jim Thompson and The Man Who Wasn't There and The Big Sleep and The Big Lebowski etc.

Be interesting to see their take on it.
The eighties version been dated for awhile. Be hard to top Pacino's performance, but the storyline is doable for the third time.

That prequel/sequel thing is just so NOT the Coen bros and frankly there is too much of it in Hollywood. You can count on the Coens bringing a fresh perspective to this. I hope it goes smoothly and is in theaters next year!

As for Lebowski, there is a film starring Turturro and resurrecting his role as Jesus. The Coens are not involved other than to give their "ok" for using the character they wrote.

  19. whoa! I like what Im hearing. This is one of my favorite movies (80s version) and the Coen brothers are one of my favorite writers/directors.
De Palma's Scarface perfectly captured the 80s I felt. With the social political environment and S. Florida... even Moroder's disco influenced soundscapes were brilliant. The Coen brothers are one of the few that can be imaginative enough to pull off the remake (I hope).

They can remake the Carpetbaggers and Nevada Smith...

He's too old now, but I always wanted to see William Hurt star in a remake of Shane.

    It's a good simple story.
Very brave of them taking on this.
True Grit is one thing, but topping Pacino's~ Scarface is another.

  24. Yes I totally see your point. I'm curious how they will protray our current situation with Mexico. They are imaginative enough to make it compelling. How they will make a villian as profound as Pacino was is going to be difficult. Pacino delivered some great lines.
