Many audio and music enthusiasts still prefer analog sources over digital ones for one reason or another. Yet the future is more and more digital. However, there may be a niche market for analog audio in the future too. And who knows, perhaps analog might even gain more popularity when it becomes more and more a thing of the past, an object of nostalgia. So, what technology could a new analog audio format use? Currently we have the needle tracking a vinyl groove and tapes of altered magnetic content. Could it be optical (not the optically read vinyl groove)? A Laserdisc's video is analog while it is still optically read dots like digital content. Could that tech be used for for analog audio, too? Or wasn it actually used with the first Laserdiscs? What other technologies are there currently? What would the tech-oriented amongst us suggest for future possibilities?
