First step is recognizing you have a problem.

Second step is to stop visiting this forum.

While I understand the desire to collect, I've come to realize physical objects are mostly a burden and source of anxiety. I've been weeding out my collection and cutting down the amount of music I buy, and I've found streaming/downloading to perfectly suit my music-listening needs. Admittedly, I do still occasionally buy CDs or records, but I am now very selective when doing so.

The expression "vinyl junkie" is apt for good reason.

If your bank tells you to stop by cancelling your credit cards I would think it would be a piece of cake to quit.

I already have tomorrow morning planned out to go to Vintage Vinyl in Fords to get a new CD that came out today along with some others that I want. Will probably do the hour drive from there to Princeton Record Exchange as well.

Yeah, not happening any time soon.

    Nope.

I like to have a physical artifact I can pick up, look at, read, etc.

Downloading will never satisfy that longing...

I stopped. I will admit it wasn’t easy for me, but I made a decision to just quit. I got tired of it. I did it for numerous reasons.

    1. I have limited space to store things

    2. With very few places to buy CDs were I live, I am left with ordering online which I hate. Too many times I have had issues with items being damaged or the descriptions being wrong. Plus I don’t want to wait for it to arrive nor do I want to worry about the mail service losing my order which has happened.

    3. It was becoming a hole I could no longer fill. I would buy a CD, then I would want another one. I was constantly looking for music to add to my collection and not taking the time to appreciate what I already have.

    4. Buyers remorse. I would buy something I thought I wanted only to lose interest in it after a few plays. I would end up selling it at a fraction of what I paid.

    5. CDs cost money. Perhaps if I had plenty of disposable income this would not be an issue but I don’t. I want to save money rather then blow it.

    6. Obsession over scratches. I obsess over things. One of my biggest obsessions is flaws on the cd. Worrying about scratches is definitely something I am tired of and no amount of logic or reason stops me from obsessing about it.

    7. I just don’t want to be someone who clings to obtaining stuff.

For me, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

If there was no Amazon or Discogs it would probably cut my music spending by 80 %, but there is, so i'll always be a slave to my discs.

At some point in my life I completely stopped buying CDs for a few years because I was traveling/living overseas.

Trouble is, I'm still trying to catch up with everything I've missed during that time and I'm buying twice as much stuff than before.

    Old habits die hard.

When I came to Canada in 2010, I pretty much stopped buying music for a few years. Occasionally I would have a CD for birthday/Christmas but apart from a few sporadic purchases there was nothing of note until 2014 when our fortunes took a turn for the better. I have made up for it since then, especially with second hand purchases, although there has been a lot of New vinyl bought too. It would make me sad to have to stop.

I keep buying the same titles over and over and over again. It’s like Groundhog Day.

If i stopped buying CD's and records today and never again for the rest of my life.I would get around to actually listening to all the music i already have for the rest of my life.As i get older that seems a very good idea.

    Yeah it's an addiction.
I now can't afford, after just a couple days of spending, the new Dylan box set.
Did I mention it's very much an OCD type of problem?

I wish I had more money, I can't afford all I want by any means....

I hate the feeling of "having" to have certain CDs.

Yeah I don't have a lot I haven't heard but I got over a couple thousand CD titles...notsure how many, many 2200 now? 2300? and it...
there's always the desire for something new.
Look how CRAZY everybody gets when something - anything - new (be it an old recording or a new one) comes out by someone's favorite artist on here!
And the NEW is always "the best" - only because it's new.
