There has been a lot of Eagles and Poco discussion lately. What are some country rock albums that we all may enjoy. Or country artists with a cross over appeal like Kris Kristofferson, for example.

    Some that I have:

Pure Prairie League - "Bustin' Out"
    Bob Dylan - "Nashville Skyline"
Michael Nesmith - "And The Hits Just Keep On Comin'" with "Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash"
    Beau Brummels - "Bradley's Barn"

    Other albums like:

The Kinks - "Muswell Hillbillies" (it has that faux country vibe throughout)
Elvis Presley - recordings from '75-'76 ('rock' with a country flavour)

    Thanks as always

Joe South is rock but has a country-soul flavor in many of his songs. Get a best of comp and the Raven twofer of "Introspect" and "Don't It Make You Want To Go Home"
Bob Dylan-John Wesley Harding is another great album
    Others include:
    John Fogerty-Blue Ridge Rangers
    Byrds-Sweetheart of the Rodeo
Flying Burrito Brothers-Sin City: The Very Best Of...
    International Submarine Band-Safe At Home
    Gram Parsons-GP/Grievous Angel

I listened to some of the samples on Amazon.com. I like it. But, that album cover! I NEVER would have known it was country-rock looking at that!

  16. This isn't exactly country rock in the Eagles/Poco vein, it's country rock if say, Dusty Springfield had made a couple of county LPs. It's wonderful, incredible, amazing (can you tell I like Charlie Rich?) music, but it's not really country rock as the term implies...although you really could argure that he was ahead of the curve by several years.

Is this in the same vein as "Most Beautiful Girl In The World" and "Behind Closed Doors"? The only recording I have of "The Silver Fox" is "Lonely Weekends" from the "The Sun Story" CD.

I was just listening to Kris Kristofferson's "Loving Here Was Easier" on a compilation - nice sound. Followed by "Behind Closed Doors", as I type this - I have 2 Charlie Rich songs. Is this sufficient?

  18. Not at all...the Smash recordings are their own thing. Some of them are country songs played with a rock or R&B feel, and some (like "A Field of Yellow Daisies" or "I Can't Go On") are like the Righteous Brothers meet Dionne Warwick with Elvis singing lead...there's nothing like them that I can think of.

You have to check out Shooter Jennings - "Let's Put The "O" Back In Country" it's available on vinyl and CD - a great disc from start to finish.

I can't believe no one's mentioned The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band by post No. 23.
The band that, with the first Will The Circle Be Unbroken recording, for all íntents and purposes, fused the country and rock genres indelibly together.
(The Rock & Roll version of the Vulcan mind-meld if you will... )

Or, if you just want a sampler, 89/93: An Anthology. Everyone should have some Tupelo in their collection.

For something of slightly earlier vintage, how about the Flatlanders' More a Legend Than a Band? Or, for that matter, the solo efforts of Messrs. Gilmore, Hancock and Ely?
