Delbert McClinton -- "The Jealous Kind"
Willie Nelson & Leon Russell -- "One For The Road"

One of my favorite discoveries was a country/folk/rock gem, a self-titled debut LP by a band called Morning. Al Perkins (who played with the Stones and Steve Stills among others) guested on the album but I've never heard of any of the other musicians. The music can best be described as folk-rock in the vein of CS&N and the Byrds. It features gorgeous vocal melodies and country-tinged songs littered with banjo and steel guitar. The songwriting is good, with unexpected hooks and gorgeous melodies, particularly in the standout "Angelina".

Morning supposedly did a second album, but I've never heard it.

If it's the same band I'm thinking of, they released two. One, self-titled, was I believe on Vault. The second, "Struck Like Silver", was on Fantasy and had some great tracks on it, including a dirge-like "Never Been To Spain" which made the song palatable to me (I tried, but just couldn't get into most of Three Dog Night). If you don't have "Struck", it is well worth looking for.

The first four Little Feat albums are essential listening for any fans of the genre. I should think "Sailin' Shoes" would be the most accessible starting point, though I started with "Feats don't Fail me Now" myself. The self-titled album by The Band might also be of interest.

the first Happy End LP is the best, more rock and Moby Grape/Stephen Stills-esque guitar:

Gotta put in another nod for the Outlaws. I don't have any of their regular albums, but I picked up the Green Grass and Hight Tides comp on a whim a couple of years ago 'cos I vaguely remembered 'There Goes Another Love Song' from years back.

Perhaps best described as filling the gap between Poco (more rockin' than) and Lynyrd Skynyrd (more country than). Anyway, it's the biz.

I can't believe no one's mentioned this yet, one of the greatest LPs of all time, imo (I put Workingman's Dead up there too and the Burrito's 1st)
and the re-master has bonus tracks with the original, un-erased Gram Parsons vocals...besides the first Outlaws LP, I think the rest of their stuff is kinda patchy, I think their producer was trying to get them to sound just like the Eagles (Lady in Waiting) but there's a perfect album among the 2nd to 4th LPs, like the song Hurry Sundown....
