I love Donovan but haven't heard that many covers of his songs. These are all I know of (would make a great comp) but there must be many more:

Get Thy Bearings — King Crimson
Try For The Sun — Lindsey Buckingham
Season of The Witch — Julie Driscoll & Brian Auger Trinity
Sunny Goodge Street — Judy Collins
Wear Your Love Like Heaven — Sarah McLachlan
    Lalena — Deep Purple
Lord Of The Reedy River — Kate Bush
Hurdy Gurdy Man — Steve Hillage
    Museum — Herman's Hermits

Eric Burdon and the Animals did a fine version of "Hey Gyp"

Jefferson Airplane did "Fat Angel" on their live Bless It's Pointed Little Head album.

The Allman Brothers "Mountain Jam" comes from "First There Is A Mountain". The Grateful Dead used to quote this riff as well on ocassion during 1968-1970.

I really like Herman's Hermits "Museum" the best. You can tell it's a Donavan song without even looking at the credits.

I might like alternatives to Donovan's version of ATLANTIS.

Mary Chapin Carpenter did a killer version of Mellow Yellow on the soundtrack of Steal This Movie.

I forgot to mention the amazing 'Donovan's Colours' by Van Dyke Parks.

    There's a few on Mary Hopkin's Postcard.

    Also springing to mind :

    Sunshine Superman - The Standells
Catch The Wind - Paul Revere & The Raiders
The Pebble And The Man - Bridget St. John
    Colours - Joan Baez
Sunny Goodge Street - St. Etienne; Marianne Faithfull
Try For The Sun - Hearts And Flowers
Superlungs - Terry Reid; Steve Marriott

I know I also have some garage band cover versions, including some that are in broken English...just can't think of them right now.

One could probably compile a CD comp of just "Season of the Witch" covers. Vanilla Fudge did a version of this as well.

  15. Dean Wareham also does a cover ("Colours", if memory serves) on his latest single (as 'Dean and Britta')

Galaxie 500 / Luna / Dean are just a great cover-tunes act. They have done tracks by 'composers' as diverse as Blondie, George Harrison, the Rutles, Serge Gainsbourg, Madonna, and Guns & Roses!

Deep Purple do a nice version of "Lalena" on their self-titled album from 1969.

Buck Owens does a version of "Catch the Wind" but I'm not sure it works well as a country song.

"Car Thief" by the Beastie Boys samples "Hurdy Gurdy Man"

Richie Havens does a nice version of "Wear Your Love Like Heaven"

So did Santa Esmeralda (don't laugh, I indeed mean a fine version). For you who do not know this band - it's a French disco outfit that covered many sixties songs, especially from the Animals (which may be the reason that they did Hey Gyp as well - see quote above). They had a few hits in the EU with their versions of Don't let me be misunderstood and House of the rising sun, among others. It's a sort of Spanish style disco, with strings, flamenco guitars and castagnettes. Believe me - it doesn't sound as bad as you think by this description.

Georgie Fame made a version of Mellow Yellow. It's on the Best of cd that I have.

There was a whole CD of Dono covers sometime in the '90s-- possibly called something like Island of Circles. I'll dig it out and post a track list.

Thanks, I have that on a cd, so I will have to give it a closer listen. It's my favorite Donovan song, and I like it far better than most of his hippy-dippy stuff.
