Not sure if it's been mentioned....and I just read this last night, unaware.... but.... Even before the Beatles had released any singles in the US on Capitol (really their US 'invasion' period), not counting Swan, Tollie and Vee-Jay... Del Shannon had his version of 'From Me to You' released in June '63. I believe he was the first to record and release a Beatle's song, at least in the US ( < is that right ?)...and that he predated their popular period...for the most part. I just found that remarkable. Whoa...wait a minute....maybe Billy Kramer and the Dakotas released their version of 'Do You Wanna Know a Secret' earlier..I see that it was on the US 'Imperial' label possibly released in April of 1963. That's at least their UK release date. Oh well...interesting stuff anyway. *another addition...I just found this.... Kenny Lynch is also known for a single, also issued in 1963, which flopped. That was "Misery", the first cover version of a Beatles song to be released. < UK only though ?
I know. Those royalties alone would assure that the 4 Beatles and their families were rich for life, many times over.
And Dick James, Brian Epstein, Michael Jackson (when he owned Northern Songs), etc.... Here's something I didn't know... Northern Songs Ltd was a limited company founded in 1963, by music publisher Dick James, Brian Epstein, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, to publish songs written by Lennon and McCartney, as well as songs written by George Harrison and Ringo Starr, who were all members of the Beatles. Their producer, George Martin, was offered a stake in the company but turned it down, as he believed that his position at EMI made it a potential conflict of interest. Northern Songs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia » I wonder if it WAS a conflict of interest and unattainable...or if George Marting ended up making a bad business decision ! George Harrison wasn't a "co owner" but a contract writer. I don't think Ringo had a share either. Sad isn't it ?
And quite honestly I don't believe he realized the potential in royalties. If he'd had an inkling...I bet he'd have sure tried to get in on the deal. As I wondered...I don't know if his high ethics were necessary in this case
27,500 on my list so far - includes live performances and some personal YouTube videos many more to be added
And besides everything else...culturally etc.... There are still people who not only don't realize their impact....but refuse to accept it...or downplay it at least. It's baffling.
As The Olympics are on at the moment a instrumental version of She Loves You by Doping Olympics . An unusual version sounds good to me , something a bit different
My Morning Jacket's track is NOT a Beatles cover. I also have Christmas Time (Is Here Again) as released commercially or as free mp3s by Keith Spinney, The Warm Guns, Ed Turner & Number 9 (medley of CTIHA and My Sweet Lord), The Goon Gang, The Seers, Exohxo, Paton James, Rico Pierce, Miro Zbirka (aka Miroslav Zbirka)Corey Pallon feat. Brohm, Catscan!, The Clahvens, Cuthbert, Julian Sullivan, Bad Boys, Brake.Wall, Isaac Dixon, drwalls (Derek Regan Walls), Gary Pig Gold, Creeptones, The Moonlovers, Gregory Luzitano, Dan Martin and Satan's Cheerleaders. That should take you up from 9 covers to 33.
