The mono CD is very well done, but I'm also hanging on
to my Hoffman-mastered stereo discs on Razor & Tie. I
wonder how difficult it would be for them to lease the
'On My Side' album for reissue? I would guess that MCA
owns it now, but it would be a great title for this kind of
deluxe treatment...especially with bonus tracks from the
London mono 45s like the title song and "Covered Wagon."

I would like to say that the Cherry Red/Now Sounds/Rev-Ola/RPM reissues are the most played CDs in my collection and they deserve great praise for their great selection!

I am curious as to the sources used on some recent Cherry Red CD releases. First off, when I compare The Cowsills "Meet Me At The Wishing Well" from the Now Sounds Captain Sad CD to the version on the Dennis Drake remastered Best Of CD it's obvious that noise reduction was used on the recent album reissue (although it still sound good). What source was used for this CD? Also, why were vinyl sources used for the two Tommy Roe albums on the Paisley Dreams CD? Were the tapes not available?

Now I don't mean to complain. As I said the Cherry Red family CDs are among my all-time favorites. Just curious...

The first time I completely heard the first Cowsills album (the wonderful Now Sounds reissue), that was one of my favorites as well, although the percussion instruments used (block and triangle), makes the song a little light in the loafers. I also enjoyed "Dreams Of Linda" from this album.

One of my favorite finds on one of those old Cowsills album, was a great track on the "We Can Fly" album, called, "Heaven Held". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwStz3F0Ckw Once this song gets into the chorus, it has some of those brilliant Cowsills harmonies and was written by the same guy who wrote "Lazy Day" and "98.6". I was bummed that Steve and Now Sounds never reissued that "We Can Fly" album, especially since they did such a great job on the others, it was a shame that he didn't do this one as well. The only CD reissue was done by Gordon Anderson at Collector's Choice and sadly, it was one of the rare times that an inferior tape was used on one of their usually brilliant reissues, which are now continued with "Real Gone Music". Maybe Steve Stanley can chime in on why this album was passed by them?

Last weekend I was shopping for a Spanky & Our Gang CD on Amazon, and decided on a whim to get the Cowsills Millenium Collection CD. It arrived on Tuesday and I can't get enough of it, so here I am on this thread and just ordered all three of the Now Sounds releases, new from Amazon marketplace sellers.

Remember the days when you'd buy a 45 and play it over and over because you just had to hear it again and again? That's the feeling I get with "The Rain, The Park and Other Things".

    Really looking forward to these!

We Can Fly was a great step ahead in terms of songwriting-- In Need of a Friend, Beautiful Beige, Yesterday's Girl, Grey Sunny Day are all terrific songs, up there with the era's best. Overall the feel is less "sunshiney" and more melancholy.

  15. This is good. We Can Fly is a magnificant album!

My copies of "The Cowsills", "Captain Sad", and "On My Side" all arrived this weekend. Great package all around, from the liner notes, pictures, track commentaries, label art, and of course the sound.

Looking forward to "We Can Fly"!

You didn't ask me, Steve, but I want to say it anyways and my favorite is "On My Side". I really think that they were onto something special with that album, sad that LONDON never did much to promote it and get it to the masses. By the time it got released The Cowsills weren't really important to most anymore, which is sad, because they really turned in a very fun and worthy album, with "On My Side".
