Critcs be damned!!! I love it anyway...

They clobbered it, despite it being a great album. Extra points if it was released in the last 10 years...

The Doors without Jim Morrison. I can't listen to every song on Other Voices and Full Circle, but I easily like half of each.

Even Ian hates this album, so I'm told. I think it's fantastic.

Bryan Adams. He sure gets a lot of flack, but who ever wrote so many songs that not only became hits but were hits for other artists they were written for. Ta heck with what others say. That boy can play/sing/write like no one else.

I can see Chinese Eyes getting some stick for tracks like "Stop Hurting People" and "Communication," but how you can dismiss an album that includes songs like "Slit Skirts," "Somebody Saved Me" and "The Sea Refuses No River" I don't know.

Actually, I've never understood why, of Townshend's three early 80s records, only Empty Glass is highly regarded. I don't think it's any better than Chinese Eyes or White City.

Maybe it was an isolated case, but the program director at one of my local FM stations gave this record a fairly unflattering review on the station's web site. I quite liked the album and sought out the 2-LP set on vinyl.

O.K., this may be the album that most influenced "This Is Spinal Tap", but it has moments of real beauty and the musicianship that Yes is famous for. As over the top as it gets, but it grows with repeated listenings, as do all great albums.

Oh, and it has the best Roger Dean cover ever  !

I always liked "Wings at the Speed of Sound". Heck , most of McCartney's 70s materials gets no respect, but I like "Wild Life", "Red Rose Speedway" and "Ram".

No way!! Did the critics really skewer these? Hard to believe, they're obvious classics...

Bob Dylan: Shot of Love. Sure, lots of people were put off by his preaching, but I kinda like the fact that Dylan takes the same bitter, snide attitude toward unbelievers that he used to take towards ex-lovers back in the 60s. Beats Amy Grant or Michael W. Smith and their sappy optimistic cheerfulness. And "Groom Still Waiting at the Altar" rocks. I think the critical view of this one has softened over the years, but I remember it was savaged at the time it came out.

    Graham Parker - THE PARKERILLA

After two critical successes, HOWLIN' WIND and HEAT TREATMENT, and the passable quickie version of STICK TO ME -- the painstakingly recorded original session tapes disintegrated in the console -- Parker released this not quite double-live LP (side four was a disco mix [!] of "Don't Ask Me Questions") to escape his contract with Mercury.

It was almost universally panned for its lack of new material or even covers, the disco side, and its reported less-than-stellar performance. Thing is, I think it's actually a good set, although I can appreciate fans at that time being frustrated with three live sides rehashing material drawn from a studio output of six sides. And the disco mix does suck -- there's no denying that!

Prince - EMANCIPATION and CRYSTAL BALL

I bought this new with the store credit earned from a bag's worth of used CDs, and was happy to make the trade. After listening, I concluded that after years of wandering confused in the hip-hop forest, here -- finally! -- was three discs of top-notch and almost-top-notch Prince. But nobody else seemed to care or buy; years later I saw new, saw-cut copies for $5.99.

After reading about distribution problems, I waited for the CRYSTAL BALL outtakes box to hit the used bins, and was rewarded with four discs for $20 or so, and again, my expectations were exceeded. So I guess that makes me a fan.

Replacements - DON'T TELL A SOUL and ALL SHOOK DOWN

Hipsters cried "major label sellout," but I liked these post-Tommy Stinson records, too, although I'm not sure these discs were all that negatively reviewed by the mainstream press.

Agree! I listen to Chinese Eyes or White City more than I lsten to Empty Glass these days. But, my real guilty Townsend pleasure is Psychoderelict--pretensions be damned! I really like this album, and I've got both versions, with and without dialogue, and I have to admit I like the dialogue version best.

Wasn't there something strange about this cut at the time? Was it not included on the initial pressing, or re-recorded, or something like that?
