Here is a track by Frankie Paul that I had voiced in 2007 at Bravo's Smallworld studio on a Sly & Robbie riddim built for Horace Andy in 2006 at Harry J. I had kinda forgotten about it and stumbled upon it last week looking for something else. So I asked Steven Stanley to mix it and this is what he just sent me this morning.
Nice production, classic Sly & Robbie sound, I think it has a definitive Black Uhuru vibe going on. I am not too hot on his vocals, I don't know if it's just psychological because he is Swedish and I generally can't take Swedish Reggae singers seriously, but in the context of this music he fits in, he has a bit of that Waterhouse style in there. Thanks for uploading, that was great, what a fabulous voice. Put it out.
And here is a track by Skully Sims recorded during the sessions with Horace at Harry J. This is the mix by Steven Stanley (there is another video of him playing that track but it's the rough mix) Horace had voiced "Rastafari Prophecy" on the riddim
I bought this but only made part way through it as the mistakes I found were annoying me - mind you, I'm a fussy bugger so YMMV The best guide book for Reggae that I've ever read was The Rough Guide To reggae by Steve Barrow and Peter Dalton. I don't know if it's still available but if not s/h copies should be easy to find...
Just purchased Enter Into His Gates With Praise - Johnny Clarke and Sufferer by The Kingstonians on cd will be interesting to hear how these new releases sound I may be over buying vinyl online as they have a habbit of turing up a bit warped I dont know if anyone else has this issue
Brand new, just for you! Steven Stanley just did this mix of Carlton Livingston's FAITH (nothing to do with George Michael's homonymous track)
Hi Guillaume Question - I received an email announcing the Satta dub album available for download. Will physical copies be available ie vinyl or CD? Best Gregg
At the moment, there is no plan for a physical release. Plus given the number of tracks on this expanded edition (33!!!!) I would have to make tough choices to cut some tracks from a vinyl or even a cd release...
Damn, this had passed me by - I'm a huge Abyssinians fan so this is exciting news for me, can you say what the extra tracks will be yet Guillaume? Also, where did the previously unreleased tracks on the original (especially the flute cut of Satta) come from, I'm guessing Bernard?
You'll find answers to your questions on TAXI TABOU1 and in the process, thou shalt discover the wornderful world of TABOU1's recent releases (some of them)
Haven't read either one but I gifted this to a reggae lover and got positive feedback. The Encyclopedia of Reggae: The Golden Age of Roots Reggae, Mike Alleyne (2012, Sterling Publishing) The layout and illustrations make it fun to skim through. Of course, no book will be definitive, so I take what I can and move on.
Jerusalem, Alpha Blondy The title cut used to be my favorite AB song but I play Boulevard de la Mort more than any track lately...
It looks like both Cherry Red and Dub Store have versions of this coming out, not sure which one will be best.
The hi resolution (24bit wav) edition of MILITANT by Junior Natural is now available, exclusively on Militant - hi-rez 24bit limited edition, by Junior Natural + Sly & Robbie
There will be a 2-fer with Dubb Everlasting / Dub Expression on Doctor Bird: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dubb-Everlasting-Expression-Errol-Brown/dp/B075V1DG82 They have been quite busy with Doctor Bird, eight titles so far.
Vote in this poll: The Songs of 1967 - Round 1 Group P - Pick Your Favorites It contains Rocksteady songs, and I predict it will be the poll with the least votes in this game, so it can use all the help it can get.
some weird choices on that list, for starters Mellow Mood is the worst '67 Wailers tune and Fu Man Chu is '68 by my ears
Looking at the votes I'm guessing a lot of voters haven't heard many of the Jamaican songs, Errol Dunkley on two well he got my vote, as Lloyd says some weird choices.
Well, you shouldn't comment here, you should comment in that thread, it's not my poll, I justed wanted to point out a rare instance of Jamaican music mentioned in a "general" thread on the forum, and Rocksteady at that, even rarer. I'm pretty sure the person doing those polls isn't necessarily an expert on the genre, if you look through all the polls you will see a very eclectic collection of songs, and I thought it was fun that any JA music was included at all, and it's just a game. But having said that, I also don't see how the choices are weird, how can you argue with "007", "Baba Boom", "Rock Steady", "You Don't Love Me", "Fattie Fattie", "The Tide Is High", "Queen Majesty", "Take It Easy", "I'm Still In Love", "I've Got To Go Back Home"? And "Mellow Mood" is a great Wailers tune, so there. But, as I said, better to discuss the content of the poll in that thread.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but it's a poll put together with 2017 non Jamaican sensibilities, hence heavy on Treasure Isle and Beverley's, but little or no Gibbs, Dodd, Harriott and Buster productions, I agree it's nice to see though, also I voted for James Carr, couldn't help it.
I think that is taking it a bit too seriously, I instead focused on the positive aspect of there being any Rocksteady at all in that game, I don't think the poll is supposed to be representative of the whole genre or have all the most important tracks, and it is a series of polls so there is nothing that says there won't be more Rocksteady in a later one, there was Reggae in several of the polls in the similar 1977 game.
@marmalade166: I just realized you are the person doing those uploads of singles on YouTube! I just posted one of your clips over in the poll thread and connected the dots. I use your uploads all the time, since they're usually the best versions. (Edit: I now realize I know who you are on other forums too, I'm a bit slow, but the different nick-names sometimes makes it a bit hard to connect people...)
