I'm about to do an order at Pressure Sounds, since I'm not up to date with their most recent releases, and this is one I'll definitely add, I love Delory Wilson, always try to get anything I can find by him. When looking at the PS site I noticed that the The Inturns (aka Viceroys) Consider Yourself CD seems to be out of print already, one shouldn't sleep too long on releases nowadays... It has been quiet from Pressure Sounds for some time, but they have a new release out soon: Lloyd Parks & We The People 'Meet The People"
check their bandcamp page, there is a sh&tload of great stuff not necessarily vinyl but wicked nonetheless the Lloyd Parks album is baaad, dont know if the vinyl edition has arrived yet
Fans of Lee Perry should definitely check the bonkers version side of Althea and Donna's Gone To Negril that Pressure Sounds have just reissued Althea and Donna/Inner Circle/Lee Perry – Gone to Negril
You can listen to the full 10" on Pressure Sounds' bandcamp page Gone to Negril, by Lee Perry, Althea & Donna
I picked up the "Disco Devil" Lee Scratch Perry 12" on record store day, it sounds odd like it was noise reduced or something. Does anyone know the source of this re-issue ?
I'd assume that BMG sent Get Back a copy of the same digital file used for the 2003 Trojan reissue, which I assume was sourced from a vinyl transfer, most likely processed using CEDAR noise reduction software.
Damn. Do you know if Trojan used CEDAR on their other Black Ark comps like Open the Gate or Build the Ark? Not that it ruins music, as I think it can be tactically used by a light hand to make tracks listenable.
Trojan do have tapes for many of the tracks they originally released, but they didn't release any of the late seventies Black Ark tracks originally and following Perry's meltdown it's a period when there are big gaps in surviving tapes, unless he sent copies to Island and they are still there, so I generally assume everything from Steve Barrow's "Open The Gate" to now that is late seventies Ark material without an original overseas release is sourced from vinyl, I'm pretty sure Jeremy Collingwood who was responsible for the 2003/4 twelve inch series told me as much. On a positive note techniques, analogue gear, ADATs and software have all improved greatly over the years and skilled specialists can achieve remarkable results transferring from vinyl.
Are you saying Build The Ark & Open The Gate have been revisited to address vinyl flaws? I did a needledrop from the Open The Gate 3lp box and used iZotope RX2, which has always been able to remove pops and clicks, however on one track, can't remember which one, it failed to remove one click, I found this was also audible on the CD. As the click seems to have the top truncated, it seems like some pretty basic technique was used on the transfer from Jamaican vinyl.
My understanding is that much of the producers series including the two Ark period box sets were mostly sourced from Steve Barrow's record collection, the same as some of the Blood and Fires, I think that some of the newer alternative reissues of the same material from Trojan have benefited from later/better transfers, rather than just from different mastering, I also believe that the 2003/4 12" series which replicates most of the box sets material was entirely taken from then fresh vinyl transfers or in the case of "From Creation" a cassette copy of the dubplate. You have to bear in mind that the way those eighties vinyl transfers were done was barely any different from how original Jamaican singles were transferred for UK release back in the sixties, probably straight onto tape with a deck that tracked well rather than extracted the most information and some EQ adjustment at the time of mastering, maybe a tape edit for a nasty click, although there were some units claiming to deal with clicks and pops, things didn't get interesting until CEDAR came along and they only started in 1988. When it comes to vinyl transfers there are many variables starting at which copy of the record you start with and ending with the mastering engineer you just have to hope the client wants a light touch and the finished product to sound as close to the original release as possible, not always the case.
Agreed, it also sounds very different from the 1989 Anachron 'Turn and Fire - Upsetter Disco Dub' cut of the same track...
This comes with a free CD of the Delroy Wilson album. Three of the tracks are dubs from "Go Away Dream" King Tubby & The Aggrovators – Dubbing in the backyard
Doctor Bird(label) has been on a tear recently Here's, yet another interesting one: Hot Shots of Reggae: An interesting various artists album that was both released in Jamaica under the Beverly’s imprint label under Leslie Kong and later in the UK on Trojan. This covers the early reggae period around 1969/1970, though still with those glorious vocal harmonies that were a hallmark of the slightly earlier rock steady era. Various ‘Hot Sots of Reggae’ CD (Doctor Bird) 4/5
As was expected, Ernie B's is closing. Here's a post from the B&F forum Blood and Fire • View topic - Message from Ernie B about EBrecords/EBreggae
End of an era, glad to see he'll be relaunching. The deals were getting pretty crazy, desperate near the end.
The deals were pretty crazy, but no selection to buy from. I hope he has better luck this time around.
Next time Ninjaman records a new tune he'll be 76 years old He just got sentenced to 25 years Probably the baddest DeeJay I voiced him twice in 2000 or so and he was absolutely awesome on the mike
As it's almost Christmas time again, so here's one for all the Rootsmen! Christmas-A-Come | Eek-A-Mouse & Roots Radics (12" Greensleeves Disco)
It's sad to see him go; unbelievable sales currently going on but see absolutely nothing to buy; used to have such an expansive inventory; must be trying to liquidate everything
