A couple of weeks ago I posted a thread about musical tastes and LastFM was referenced. A few people linked their accounts and asked about mine. Instead of just posting a link I decided it might be fun to do it in a "countdown" style, posting a few tracks from each artist and a link to the artist's Wikipedia page. I figure if I average 50 artists a week I can get through this in 3 months! We shall see if I can see this through.

Please note that these are my 500 most played artists of the last 2.5 years, not necessarily my Top 500 Artists overall. I'm sure about about 2/3 would make my Top 500 list. The songs I link from each artist may or may not be my 3 favorites. Some may just be good introductions for those unfamiliar with the artists.

Comments are welcomed, but please no trolling.

    500. The Waterboys

Often lumped together with acts like Simple Minds, Big Country and even U2, the Waterboys produced slick sounding rock music with a heavy Celtic influence. I first discovered them in the mid-80s. Their 80s output is quite good.

#27 on my lastfm. Pagan Place, This is the Sea and Fisherman's Blues are all essential listening for me, the first two the apotheosis of the epic "Big Music", and the latter plunging into celtic roots.

    498. Popol Vuh

Popol Vuh is often associated with Prog Rock or Krautrock although their sound doesn't neatly fit into any category. I became aware of Popol Vuh through the films of Werner Herzog.

    497. The Rose of Avalanche

Often associated with the Goth Rock and Post-Punk genres, the Rose of Avalanche to me had a lot of late 60s/early 70s vibes blended into a distinct 80s sound. Not many people have heard of them but John Peel was a fan.

    496. Cheap Trick

Now it's time for a band this forum is familiar with. I was in elementary school when I discovered them, pre Budokan. All the other kids loved Kiss, but Cheap Trick wrote some truly infectious songs. I still enjoy their 70s output.
