You really should check it out. His performance is in that film is transcendent. Its also a movie you find yourself thinking about long after the final credits have rolled. One of the best films of the past decade, in my opinion.

man, this is sad news. surely one of the best, if not the best, actors of his generation. can't think of one duff role he's taken on.

props to him for never buying into the hollywood bull**** and remaining a solid, credible actor who can pretty much carry ANY movie with his incredible chops. Lincoln is a fine example of this. pretty turgid movie, but I couldn't keep my eyes off him for a second and he deservedly won best actor at the Oscars. mesmerising performance.

his performance as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood is surely a career highlight, but pretty much everything he has done has been a solid 9/10. My Left Foot and In the Name of the Father are other notable standouts, for me.

a great, great actor, for sure.

strongly disagree. sure, the casting of Diaz was a misstep, but overall, I thought the movie was solid with some great action and decent performances. the cinematography for the opening scene was breathtaking. a strong 7/10

we must agree to disagree, i find his performance to be.....overly animated to the point of silliness.

When I think of There Will be Blood it's always of that first--what is it, a half hour or more?--where not a word is spoken. A gripping moment in cinema and a masterstroke by both Anderson and DDL.

Just seeing Scorcese in the same sentence as Harlin gives me the :hurl:

  8. Yes the opening half hour w Johnny Greenwoods minimal score and not a word spoken. Beautiful and dramatic.

Hopefully he's just preparing for his next role, as an actor who decides to quit acting.

Has it ever been revealed why Lewis decided to reincarnate the voice of John Huston for that role? (according to Roger Ebert).

Edit: After a bit of googling, I answered my own question:

‘A few people have asked me if I modelled the voice on [actor-director] John Huston. I didn’t. But I did listen to some tapes of Huston’s voice, among others. And there was something about the vigour of Huston’s language that appealed to me.’ It’s a comparison that’s fuelled further by similarities between ‘There Will Be Blood’ and Huston’s own ‘The Treasure of the Sierra Madre’.

The way he goes about doing his work must be draining and unhealthy. I could see why he would want to walk away from it.

Not at all. He asked the Gorts to delete his thread when he found out there already was another one. You must be confusing him with someone else.

Every great actor must throw in the towel at some point and Daniel Day-Lewis is no exception.

He was stunning in A Room With A View, easily matching the the talents of costars Judi Dench and Maggie Smith near the start of his career. To come in at that level is just unprecedented - you only get a few performers like that a decade.

Don't blame Martin Scorsese for that film's shortcomings, blame it on Harvey Weinstein... he interfered and messed with that film during it's post-production.
