Exclusive to each of the box sets is ‘NEVER LET ME DOWN (2018)’, a new production of the 1987 album. The seeds of this reimagining of the album were first sown in 2008 when David asked Mario McNulty to remix the track ‘Time Will Crawl’ and record new drums by longtime Bowie drummer, Sterling Campbell, along with strings. The track was issued on the iSelect compilation to much acclaim, and in the notes, for that record, David remarked ‘Oh, to redo the rest of that album’. -------------------- Since David mentioned "the rest" of the album, does that mean the version of "Time Will Crawl" will be the 2008 remix?
Thinking that too ... it seems that if NLMD is a 2018 version with new instrumentation, then the 2008 TWC remix is missing for now?
Hmmm, The Serious Moonlight cover is identical to a bootleg recording of the Montreal 1983 show supposedly sourced from a reference tape mixed by Bob Clearmountain called Totally Serious.
That was a very pleasant announcement... I didn't think that I would ever say this but... The 2018 Version of Never Let Me Down sold this to me I instantly liked what they did with Zeroes and to imagine the entire Album like this... I am happy! Hope you are happy too?
What gaps do we have here, to be plugged next RSD? They usually release a live album from the period but we have 2 in this set. I thought they might have a Lets Dance Rodgers remix in the set, maybe that will be RSD?
I think I'm gonna pass on chasing down the book and the re:calls this time out. It's getting a bit trainspotty for me, and I easily fatigue at some of these remixes. Most likely, NLMD'18 will be only on the 24/96 or Redbook d/l boxes, and I ripped the Glass Spider DVD tonight to find that the horror stories about the audio are not an exaggeration. So I haz no decent Serious Spider live show currently.
Bowie hand selected MM and Sterling Campbell to rework TWC while he was alive. He clearly thought the drums were problematic, and even NLMD‘s most ardent fans are unanimous in that.
I think we're good to assume these will continue up until the end of his career - the first line of the press release is "Parlophone Records are proud to announce David Bowie Loving The Alien (1983 – 1988), the fourth in a series of box sets spanning his career from 1969."
One question remains: The orginal NLMD on vinyl contained shorter edits of some songs. Those shorter edits are reproduced in Re:Call 4. How did they do it in the 2018 vinyl box set ? -Did they finally manage to do a vinyl version of NLMD with the longer cd mixes ? (considering some room was gained from dropping Too dizzy) -Or is the vinyl of NLMD the same as the original with the short edits ? (In that case buyers of the vinyl box set will have them... twice, in the box ) (And by the way, I'm not holding my breathe, but maybe "Too Dizzy" is included as a hidden track, so that it won't appear in the listings and statements but will still be there ?)
the 2018 Remaster original Version will be the CD-Mixes on Vinyl. The shorter Vinyl-Versions are found on ReCall4 and for Never Let Me Down (2018) I strongly advice you to read the full announcement again..
