Dave played a big role in breaking that band.
Letterman is The Last Old Man of late night. He'll be missed.

I'd say there is absolutely no chance they will select Conan. Conan's fans view him as a guy who got screwed and didn't get a fair chance, but I suspect the consensus view among network execs is that he's simply a guy who failed in that timeslot. The fact that Fallon is doing so well currently makes Conan's ratings on the Tonight Show look even worse. The argument that Conan wasn't given enough time to build an audience doesn't hold much water when Fallon has been able to build an audience instantly. Conan's current ratings on TBS hardly support the notion he should be given another chance on a network show either. Plus, he's 11 years older than Fallon.

I think the timing is right... after being the good guy in the war with Leno for 20 years, Dave has started to get more negative press and online chat lately, with more people (including myself I'll admit) commenting that he and his show feel tired. Now he can go out a legend, as he deserves to.

I love Conan, but he's damaged goods and will be 52 next year. Besides, I think he likes the freedom owning his show and airing it on TBS gives him.

Also, would you want to be known as the guy who replaced Letterman twice?

Conan isn't as funny as he used to be, to me anyway.

I doubt he wants it, but they'll probably offer the job to Seinfeld first.

Interesting. Yeah, it would actually be a nice change of pace to have a female late-night host.

Johnny Carson was in late night television when I was 5. His Tonight Show had a huge impact on me and late night television in general.

It's sad to see Dave go, but I thought he would in the next year or so in the other thread about how long he'll stay on late night TV. Dave was very good at NBC. He was good for a while at CBS, but slowly went downhill, especially after his heart attack.

I wonder if any exec would seriously consider Jay for the job.

Seinfeld's too old. He's turning 60 this month.

Yeah. You guys can probably count out anyone older than 45 or so.

Does that then make Chelsea Handler the forerunner?

I know she's leaving E! at the end of the year, but I hear her ratings have been tanking, so probably not. I'd like to see Tina Fey or Amy Poehler, but I doubt either of them would go up against their friend, Jimmy Fallon.

Go way out in left field and get someone who ya just look at and laugh and who is popular with the kiddies! Zach Galifianakis. Not that he'd be interested - movies much more lucrative and probably more his thing.

I like the Vince Vaughan and Amy Poehler suggestions. Maybe Maya Rudolph. Not sure they have any interest. And I like Craig Ferguson too.

But I don't really care too much. I'll check out whoever it is if its someone new, and I'll watch the portions with guests I want to see, same as every other late night show.

I'd love to see Craig Ferguson, but I'm not sure how he'd do with "the kids".

I could see Bill Maher or Stephen Colbert getting the nod.
