I was lucky enough to score a copy of Steve's DCC gold CD of The All-Time Greatest Hits of Roy Orbison from samgoody.com, and all I can say is wow! The disc came today, and I am giving it a spin as I type. It is just fantastic. I also have the current Sony Music 16 Biggest Hits CD, and although it sounds good, I always felt that Orbison's vocals sounded a bit harsh in spots. Now, I have not had a chance to do a direct comparison of the two Orbison CDs, but I detect no harshness on the DCC CD whatsoever. Amazing. How old are these recordings? They sound new to me! Thank you, Steve! :)

P.S. The DCC Orbison disc I received is a re-seal, but that doesn't bother me one bit.

Whats the story with Roys Monument Recordings? Does Sony own them, or did they merely license them from Monument?

I believe Sony owns the Monument label these days...

    I have the following:

    1. CBS/Sony Mastersound Gold Sings Lonely and Blue - Nice, but harsh vocals as well.
    2. The DCC Gold CD All Time Greatest Hits - Very sweet sounding, 2nd best.
    3. The DCC LP All Time Greatest Hits - The king - #1, best sounding I have, very lush. The reigning version for the living room.
    4. The Rhino Double LP For the Lonely - More highs, vocals less distorted on Only The Lonely and other songs, good bass, good dynamics. Punches through on the road very well and is preferred for traveling.

Both the mono and stereo Classic records Sings Lonely and Blue LPs were shipped to me today.

In case it is not obvious, I kinda like Roy.

Tim, I was actually curious as to whether folks had other recommendations for good-sounding Orbison CDs. Guess not. ;)

The DCC disc pretty much covers it. The Sun years are worth exploring, though only a couple of tracks are really that good.

Mystery Girl was a great comeback album, as was the HBO concert special that preceded it. The latter may have been reissued on DVD recently, while Mystery Girl was done very well by MFSL.

Has anyone heard the MFSL "Lonely and Blue"? I was just wondering if it's an improvement on the Sony gold version.

I only have a few Roy's so far... Combo Concert, Rhinos 18 Greatest, and Live at the BBC. Of those I would definately recommend Live at the BBC, very good material and a very nice mastering.

I've been considering picking up the Official Bootleg, its only $25 used at my local mom & pop down here.

  12. I have a 70's lp called "Laminar Flow" and Roy's posthumous release "King Of Hearts" as cd's, they're good too. If that voice gets to you the way it is supposed to, then most of his records are pretty listenable.

I have the Orbison Records comp Best Of Roy Orbison (green cover) cd and it is largely remakes of his monument stuff. It has the duet with kd lang on "Crying" but is forgettable otherwise.

The "Black & White Night" show was always a favourite, but I have not bought the cd - I just watch it on video.

    - - - -

The MOST AMAZING thing on SH's "R.O. 20 Greatest" disc is how "Love Hurts" sounds. Every other mastering I've ever heard sounds like a sandstorm in comparison.

STEVE - you must tell us how you pulled that one off.

Hey Tim, if you get the chance, post your thoughts on any differences between the mono and stereo pressings after you've given 'em a good listen. Classic claims the mono is a fold-down and I'm curious as to whether some EQing was performed on the mono mix to differentiate it from the stereo mix.

I have the double Rhino LP and "Black and White Night" on LP. Was "Mystery Girl" released on LP? I think so, but I don't remember seeing it.

    I need that DCC disc...

Legendary Roy Orbison 4-disc set is good, if not up to SH quality. I think it still may be around. Worth having in that one disc cannot do Roy the Boy justice.

I had a chance to pick this up used for only $15 about a year ago but let it slip away. What was I thinking (or not thinking)? :(

Yeah, for the completist (up to start of the MGM years), that's the one to get.

"Mystery Girl" was on vinyl on the Virgin label. I bought it shortly after it came out. It preceded "A Black and White Night," also on Virgin.

Greg, glad to hear you got a copy of the Orbison DCC disc too. I copied it to a CD-R last night and listened to the CD-R most of the day at work.
