I bought used equipment from a dealer selling on Audiogon. Rather than sending to me, I asked for it to be sent directly to another company for upgrades... After paying for the item, I got a call from the dealer telling me that UPS online tracking will show the item as returned to sender, which it did upon arrival.
So what's the reason for this?

It sounds like the company it was sent to for upgrades might have been away and unable to sign for it so it became a UPS responsibility and they returned it.

The dealer knew before shipping my item that it would be recorded by UPS as returned to sender. I got a call from him immediately after paying online, saying it would be shown as returned to sender after the upgrade company received it, and not to worry about that.
The company handling the upgrades was not away and I've had my item for several weeks now.

Sounds like your seller is unethical and either used the trick of putting the intended address as a return address and a undeliverable address as the "to" address *OR* is pulling some sort of shenanigans using their work shipping process.
